Nitazenes are extremely potent synthetic opioids, up to 250 times stronger than heroin, linked to a surge in overdose deaths across Europe, especially the UK, Scotland, Estonia, and Latvia. These drugs, mainly produced illicitly in China, are often mixed into heroin and fake pills, making street drugs dangerously unpredictable.
Even tiny amounts can cause fatal overdoses by shutting down the central nervous system. Symptoms include very small pupils, difficulty breathing, loss of consciousness, cold and clammy skin, and blue lips or fingernails.
Naloxone can reverse overdoses if administered quickly, but many tests do not detect nitazenes, so the true death toll may be higher than reported. Authorities warn this is a growing public health crisis and urge immediate medical help if overdose symptoms appear.
If you or someone else shows these symptoms after taking drugs, call emergency services immediately.
