Every weekend, tens of thousands of players put up their best decks to compete in the Weekend Ranked event for a chance at free packs. Every week, I post about my experience playing during this heated event.
Happy New Year mortals! While New Year festivities are underway, the Weekend Ranked event still continues to run. As with any trading card game, the metagame constantly shifts to balance out win rates: if an overpowered deck archetype is found, it will be played by many players, leading the counter-decks to come out of the woodwork, balancing out win rates in the long run. This week, I took my prized Aggro War deck out to battle against the competition again - let's figure out how it fared against a changing meta.
Deck Overview
Deck Link: GUDecks
I didn't make many changes to my deck since the last Weekend Ranked, except the inclusion of 1x Orcish Elite for additional early board control. With the increase of aggressive decks taking over the ranked ladder, I thought it might be a good inclusion.
The rest of the deck is pretty standard Aggro War fare - strong early-game units that aim to control the board from turns 1 - 4 before dealing finishing blows in the next 2 - 3 turns.

The meta has changed quite a bit since I first played Weekend Ranked. It used to be swarmed with mid-range Nature decks in the earlier weeks, but it seems like that number has since shrunk in favor for Zoo Light decks. Mid-range Nature has usually been a good match-up for my Aggro War deck due to a few reasons:
- Mid-range Nature puts out big creatures, but whenever this is done, my creatures are not dealt with and I can deal a lot of damage to the face.
- The Confused keyword on many Nature units can cause a game-losing attack randomly since I don't usually kill their creatures past a certain turn.
- Their main early-game removal spells, Lightning Strike and Canopy Barrage target random units and can cause costly mistakes when I have multiple units on the board.
The popular deck of this weekend seems to be the Zoo Light archetype. I previously experimented with a budget version of it here and found it to be pretty strong due to cards like Light's Levy that could swing board control for a cheap cost. Playing Aggro War against it feels like a toss-up, winning when I can control the board early via early Relics, and losing when the Zoo Light deck draws their most valuable cards and buffs. There used to be very few Light decks in the Mythic Weekend Ranked before. 2 weeks ago, only 1 of my 25 matches was against a Light deck. Last week, there were 3. And now, there are 8!
One deck that I found quite interesting to play against was the Hidden Deception deck. My opponent simply played a bunch of hidden creatures, buffed them, and finished me off before I could deal enough damage to him. My opponent didn't seem to do too well in the overall Weekend Ranked event but I would definitely like to explore this deck archetype in the near future.
Historical Performance
I started playing this deck and its variations 4 weeks ago when I started taking the Weekend Ranked event more seriously. Its performance has been really good in the event but I'm afraid for the likely shift towards a counter-aggro meta soon. With both Aggro War and Zoo Light being popular decks, it's only a matter of time before more of their counters start to appear in the Weekend Ranked event. No one knows when the meta will change but I have a hunch that it might be sooner rather than later.
Past Weekend Ranked posts and performance:
Time Period | Deck | Score (Wins / Total Games) | Starting Rank |
---|---|---|---|
Dec 2021 W2 | Aggro War | 21 / 25 | Twilight Shadow |
Dec 2021 W3 | Aggro War | 16 / 25 | Mythic |
Dec 2021 W4 | Aggro War | 19 / 25 | Mythic |
Jan 2022 W1 (Current) | Aggro War | 18 / 25 | Mythic |
Concluding Thoughts
It has been another exhilarating Weekend Ranked with tough battles and exciting competition. As difficult as each match may be, I enjoy the thrill of difficult opponents and pushing my deck to its limits. I'm looking forward to the day where I can hit a 20 / 25 score in the Mythic bracket which will net me 2 DO Legendary packs, but it seems like a pretty tough barrier to cross. May the best players win!
