As far as food is concerned, I mostly have an open mind. I would like to try it once and if it tastes good, may be more than once. Nevertheless, there is this one thing that I avoid at any cost just like a plague: tomatoes. But I don’t want you to think that I am a fussy eater.

It’s true that tomatoes were my favorite for some time. These would be my usual choices for salads, sandwich layers would not be complete without them, and sometimes I would eat them as they are from the plant. But something changed then. Whenever I ate them, I always had these horrible stomachaches. Initially, I thought it was only by chance but it kept recurring.
I did some research and found out that tomatoes can be quite acidic especially for someone already having problems with the tummy. I discovered that I was not alone. There are lots of people who suffer from ulcers in the stomach and tomato can worsen their symptoms considerably.
Well, I’m not a doctor but it does make sense. Tomatoes are full of all sorts of great things like vitamins and minerals, but they are also very acidic. And if you’ve ever had an ulcerated stomach, you know that acid is the last thing you want to put into your system.
Therefore, I took the decision to completely get rid of tomatoes from my diet. Boy, was it difficult! The tangy taste, juicy texture and bright color were all missed by me. However, I got reprieve from not experiencing those stomach pains any longer.
I have substituted other foods for tomatoes in my diet that do not irritate my digestive system. In this regard, sweet potatoes have become a regular part of my meals due to their vitamin A content that can actually help prevent ulcers. Red bell peppers? They may never be as juicy as tomatoes but they are still vibrant and packed with nutrients.
Also, I have started consuming more probiotic-rich foods such as yoghurt and kimchi. These help to restore the balance of bacteria in my gut and keep my stomach happy. They are also tasty, so it is a positive situation.
Now, I know what you are thinking: "But what about all the research that says tomatoes are good for you?"
It’s true, there is an abundance of proof indicating that tomatoes make a smart choice for many people. However, when it comes down to it, I must respect my own body.
Currently my body has forbidden me from eating tomatoes. Although someday, I might be able to consume them without any reservation. For now though, sticking with this tomato-free diet is enough.
So if you invite me over for dinner one time and wonder why I say no to your tomato-based meals politely know that nothing personal to be taken out of that decision making process. It’s me just playing safe on my end too. Maybe instead we can bring some sweet potatoes along.
