Seven days from now, the implementation of the European stablecoin regulation will begin. It will take place on June 30.
The requirement includes registration within the EU. What is not clear is how this regulation will be implemented in decentralized stablecoins and stablecoins originating from outside the EU.
As a result of this new development, there are crypto exchanges in the EU that will no longer include stablecoins in their list of cryptocurrencies. The first is Uphold. Even the USDT is not immune to this policy. This decision by Uphold is part of their compliance with the requirements demanded by MiCA.
Despite the restriction on stablecoins, only three will be allowed in Uphold. This is Paypal's stablecoin, PYUSD; and the Circle's USDC and EURC.
Binance, on the other hand, has a different decision. This will not automatically delist the aforementioned stablecoins. Instead, they will only limit users' access to stablecoins without MiCA's permission.
Interestingly, Kraken made it clear that although they are willing to comply with what the law says, they will not remove USDT from the list despite the MiCA prohibition. Instead, they will find a way to keep USDT on the list. This is probably the decision of Kraken as a result of their consideration of the market size of USDT.
OKX's decision is also very similar to Uphold's. Instead of keeping USDT, it will be replaced by USDC.
According to MiCA, the purpose of the regulation is to clarify the rules on stablecoins to make the EU more attractive for web3 companies.
What are the possible consequences of this prohibition? Will the EU become as attractive in the eyes of Web3 companies as MiCA expected? What will happen to stablecoins that cannot be traded on Uphold and OKX? How much influence do these crypto exchanges have on the stablecoins market? Will this stop the growth of the stablecoins market? Or will this decision cause huge losses to the EU and the crypto exchanges that comply with MiCA?
