RWA is a new crypto term for me, which means “real-world assets.” That’s what I love in the crypto space. You learn new ideas that you won’t encounter anywhere.
Alex Malkov wrote about tokenized RWA, which he included in this category assets like stablecoins, treasuries, shares in the automotive sector, and gold. According to him, last year's crypto market crash caused by the Terra Luna scandal has changed investors' sentiment. One is the shift from crypto-native finance firms to the automotive sector. The most interesting trend in his opinion is the emergence of tokenized treasuries, a new type of RWA product. He anticipates that this product will dethrone stablecoin, the largest tokenized RWA.
To prove his analysis, he cited the sevenfold growth in the volume of tokenized treasuries. For him, tokenized treasuries are bringing into blockchain the needed stability that investors are looking for.
Describing the advantage of tokenized treasuries over stablecoin, he saw the former “as a perfect product-market fit for risk-averse defi investors.” He believes that this asset class is safe and “immune from confidence shake-ups.” As a basis for this confidence, he mentioned that the capital allocation to tokenized US treasuries grew nearly ten times from 114 million USD at the start of 2023 to 1.09 billion USD as of last month.
Nevertheless, this does not mean that the rise of digital bonds will make stablecoins disappear. Instead, he foresees 2024 as the year that will bring competition and diversification in the crypto market.
Among tokenized RWA, the co-founder of HAQQ believes that the opportunity that has been ignored and should be given attention is the gold-backed stablecoins.
All in all, Alex is very optimistic that tokenized RWA is now showing maturity with the entrance of digital bonds. In his mind, 2024 is the year that both treasuries and gold-backed stablecoins will receive more attention.
Reading the above article, I am not sure what to think. Though I am glad to read confirmation about the positive trends in the crypto space, my mind is torn between what the analysts say and what we do here on Hive. Our stablecoin, HBD is neither backed by fiat nor by gold. Others think that our stablecoin is also not fully algorithmic, but a combination of collateral backing and market mechanisms. I am not sure how the details work. I still need to grow in my understanding of the mechanics of HBD particularly in three areas:
The locking up of HIVE tokens that serve as collateral to mint new HBD
The dynamic character of the collateralization ratio that can be adjusted through governance mechanisms, and
The influence of market demand for HBD
