I just cannot help being caught by the irony of it all: here is the man whose work led to the largest Bitcoin seizure in history, now sitting in a Nigerian jail, forgotten by the same system benefiting from his efforts.
It’s upsetting to think that billions of dollars earned from years of work will be sent to US accounts, while Gambaryan struggles to get basic medical care in a foreign prison.
It points to a deeper, darker issue with the US government’s priorities. Where is the urgency in helping one of its own while it is more than happy to collect seized assets? Gambaryan's skills solved major cases, from the Silk Road to saving children from exploitation rings, and yet he was left to suffer, treated like an afterthought.
Not irresponsible: inhuman.
What message does this send? That no matter how much one dedicates their career to fighting crime, a citizen’s safety and wellbeing is just collateral damage to be addressed when convenient for the government? Its completely outrageous. If Gambaryan's contributions mattered, then his freedom matters just as much. Otherwise, we are left questioning how much the US values its citizens' lives compared to the value it places on Bitcoin.
