El otro día me encontraba viendo un video musical de la banda Gorillaz, cuando la inspiración llegó a mi. Tenía tiempo sin dibujar, y se me ocurrió hacer un personaje adolescente con influencia punk, inspirado en la estética del mundo de Gorillaz.
Fue allí cuando empecé a buscar imágenes de referencia en mi Pinterest para realizar la ilustración de manera adecuada, respetando el estilo exagerado de Gorillaz. Encontré diferentes imágenes, y empecé a ilustrar.
De esta manera nació Rank, un personaje original, inspirado en el estilo visual de la banda Gorillaz. Sin mas que comentar, les mostraré el proceso creativo para realizar esta ilustración.
The other day I was watching a music video of the band Gorillaz, when inspiration struck me. Tenía tiempo sin dibujar, y se me ocurrió hacer un personaje adolescente con influencia punk, inspirado en la estética del mundo de Gorillaz.
That's when I started looking for reference images on my Pinterest to make the illustration in a proper way, respecting the exaggerated style of Gorillaz. I found different images, and started to illustrate.
This way Rank was born, an original character, inspired by the visual style of the band Gorillaz. Without further comments, I will show you the creative process to make this illustration.
Step by Step:
Primero, comencé haciendo un boceto rustico del personaje, para luego definir los rasgos y detalles principales.
First, I started by making a rustic sketch of the character, and then defined the main features and details.
Tras esto, decidí concentrarme en realizar el Line Art, para continuar con el coloreado de nuestro protagonista. Quería que la paleta de colores contrastara mucho con el diseño exagerado y feo de "Rank", por lo que decidí usar una paleta color pastel para contrastar de manera adecuada.
Decidí dejar sus ojos en blanco, sin colorear sus pupilas, para mantener un estilo espectral en el personaje, y colorear ojeras marcadas bajo sus ojos. Continué con las sombras y detalles de la ropa y la cara, marcando fuertemente las zonas oscuras y claras.
After that, I decided to concentrate on making the line art, to continue with the coloring of our main character. I wanted the color palette to contrast a lot with the exaggerated and ugly design of "Rank", so I decided to use a pastel color palette to contrast properly.
I decided to leave his eyes blank, without coloring his pupils, to keep a spectral style to the character, and to color dark circles under his eyes. I continued with the shadows and details of the clothes and face, strongly marking the dark and light areas.
Llegados a este punto, decidí colorear el fondo de un verde claro, y colocar mi firma en la parte superior del lienzo, dando por finalizado mi ilustración de Rank.
At this point, I decided to color the background a light green, and place my signature at the top of the canvas, finalizing my illustration of Rank.
Me siento muy a gusto con el resultado final, y considero que logré los objetivos que tenía en mente. El diseño de personajes y estilo de dibujo de la banda Gorillaz es muy diferente al mio, por lo que me agrada mucho haber salido de mi zona de confort para lograr completar este reto. También disfruté mucho el resultado final del coloreado, por lo que estoy mas que satisfecho con toda la ilustración. I feel very comfortable with the final result, and I think I achieved the goals I had in mind. The character design and drawing style of the band Gorillaz is very different from mine, so I'm very pleased to have gone out of my comfort zone to complete this challenge.
