There is a saying:'Life is too short for you to be unhappy'. These are the words my Dad always says to me but now the words have become echoes in my memory as he passed on recently. It was painful when I was told he was gone. It was shocking that I couldn't accept that he was gone until I saw his body with my own eyes.
Back to his words, it's been a while since I have spent time with my nephews and nieces. So today I decided to go visit them and spend quality time with them, at least they won't be at school because it's summer holiday. As I got there, my guess was right because I met them glued to the TV watching an Anime titled 'Attack On Titan'. Immediately they saw me and they were excited, so was I. They collected the goodies I came with for them and they abandoned me to go continue their Anime. So I used that opportunity to catch up with my sister.
After catching up with my sister, I went to join them so I could spend some time with them as they watched their cartoon. Then they introduced me to Levi Ackerman. A very strong character in the TV series 'Attack On Titan'. Levi is a soldier, who is a trained combat fighter and who works for the Survey Corps Special Operations Squad, according to how they explained his character role to me. I got so intrigued by this character that I got comfortable watching a few episodes with them.
As I continued watching the Anime with them, I decided to draw the fictional character, Levi. I didn't care that I had not sketched or painted in a long while. I just had the strong feeling to do it for them and I had my fingers crossed that I would like it.
I took a pencil and a plain notepad from my handbag (which I always carry with me) and I began to sketch quietly so as not to let them know what I was doing.
As I was sketching, my mind began to reflect on all the good times I had spent with my Dad before he passed on. With each stroke and lines that I drew, it was like I was actually letting out some grief, pain and comforting myself at the same time. Drawing Levi, was like an outlet for me which is making me think maybe I go back to my sketching and painting days. It's been so long, I was so rusty and clumsy but here is the sketch.
After made the outlines , I began to shade and bring out all the outlines to be more visible and bold. That's how I arrived at the finished product here 👇.
Materials used
HB pencil
Eraser
A4 plain Paper
After I finished, I showed it to them and they were so surprised. So before I left, they fixed it into a frame. It warmed my heart to see that they like the portrait of Levi that I made for them. As I drove home, I was happy that my visit to my family actually boosted my mood. I hope you like my unprofessional sketch of Levi.
All images above are sketched by me during a family visit.
