Returning to my publications, I present my 3d designs session, I will start with what I have modeled the most: boats.
I am showing you the model of the MV Santo Tomás de Aquino, a ferry that served the Philippine Archipelago until it sank in an accident. Yes, they can say that I am somewhat gloomy or morbid (especially if they have seen my previous publications), but they are interesting topics and I am sure that, like me, more than one will feel interested. I must emphasize that with Saint Thomas Aquinas I began a series of shipwreck investigations for a series of video documentaries in which I modeled each ship in 3d to simulate the accident. I have posted these models on some 3d model pages with the logo of the company that I want to protocolize one day: Crystal Studio (and which should represent all my audiovisual and advertising creations) but this is the first time that I present them in their fair creative value.
Leaving protocol aside, let's get right to the point.

Retomando mis publicaciones, les presento mi sesión de diseños 3d, comenzaré con lo que más he modelado: barcos.
Estoy exhibiéndoles el modelo del MV Santo Tomás de Aquino, un ferry que estuvo prestando servicios en el Archipiélago de las Filipinas hasta que se hundió en un accidente. Si, podrán decir que soy algo tétrico o morboso (sobre todo si han visto mis anteriores publicaciones), pero son asuntos interesantes y estoy seguro que, como yo, más de uno se sentirá interesado. Debo resaltar que con el Santo Tomás de Aquino comencé una serie de investigaciones de naufragios para una serie de video documentales en los cuales modelé cada barco en 3d para simular el accidente. He colgado estos modelos en algunas páginas de modelos 3d con el logo de la empresa que deseo protocolizar algún día: Crystal Studio (y que debería representar todas mis creaciones audiovisuales y publicitarias) pero esta es la primera vez que los presento en su justo valor creativo.
Dejando de lado el protocolo pasemos de lleno al grano.
This model was made in one of Autodesk's products, Maya, a 3d modeling program. It's not my best work, but then I was just getting started in Maya. Previously I used Cinema 4d, but the problems to make designs more complex than intros and certain objects became latent (in the version of Cinema I used, the more complex the modeled object was, the heavier the program became, I don't know if they have fixed that in current versions) so I ended up switching to Maya which I am very satisfied with.
The photos that I show are in themselves a photograph of the modeled ship, but in 3d design they are called "render" and, as you can see, the difference with a real photo is almost imperceptible. But it is not only the photo of the boat that is shown, because as you can see, there is also a background with some buildings, a fence, trees, among other things, all this is what, to illuminate a 3d object, is known as HDRI image.
Este modelo fue hecho en uno de los productos de Autodesk, Maya, un programa de modelado 3d. No es mi mejor trabajo, pero entonces estaba iniciándome en Maya. Anteriormente utilizaba Cinema 4d, pero los problemas para hacer diseños más complejos que intros y ciertos objetos se hicieron latentes (en la versión de Cinema que usaba, mientras más complejo era el objeto modelado más pesado se hacía el programa, no sé si habrán arreglado eso en las versiones actuales) de manera que terminé cambiándome a Maya de lo cual estoy muy satisfecho.
Las fotos que muestro es en sí son fotografía del barco modelado, pero que en diseño 3d se denominan “render” y, como pueden apreciar, la diferencia con una foto real es casi imperceptible. Pero no es sólo la foto del barco lo que se muestra, pues como pueden ver, hay además un fondo con unas construcciones, una cerca, árboles, entre otras cosas, todo ello es lo que, para iluminar un objeto 3d, se conoce como imagen HDRI.
Now, on August 16, 2013, the Santo Tomás de Aquino, with six hundred forty-five passengers on board, was sailing to Cebu Island, having departed a few hours before from the Port of Surigao, south of the Philippine archipelago. She had already made the majority of her journey, but the rush to meet a tight schedule would be one of the factors that would trigger the disaster that would occur moments later.
As can be seen in the photographs, HDRI images are used to illuminate an object, and are the most ideal way to do it, with the most realistic results that can be obtained in a render. An HDRI is equivalent to several photographs that can be taken of the environment around us, then they fit perfectly into a kind of digital sphere in modeling programs, so that the finished object remains within that sphere, so that the lights of all This range of photos fully illuminates the object and creates the feeling that the object is in that place that someone previously photographed for the HDRI image. This particular HDRI was made by Andreas Mischok and can be found at Poly Haven.
Ahora bien, el 16 agosto de 2013, el Santo Tomás de Aquino, con seiscientos cuarenta y cinco pasajeros a bordo navegaba hacia la Isla de Cebú habiendo partido unas horas antes del Puerto de Surigao, al sur del archipiélago de las Filipinas. Ya había hecho la mayor parte de su recorrido, pero las prisas por cumplir con una ajustada agenda sería uno de los factores que desencadenaría el desastre que ocurriría pocos momentos después.
Tal como puede apreciarse en las fotografías, las imágenes HDRI se utilizan para iluminar un objeto, y constituyen la forma más idónea de hacerlo, con resultados de lo más realistas que se puedan obtener en un render. Un HDRI equivale a varias fotografías que puedan tomarse del ámbito que nos rodea, luego se amoldan perfectamente a una suerte de esfera digital en los programas de modelado, por lo que el objeto terminado queda dentro de esa esfera, de manera que las luces de toda esa gama de fotos iluminan completamente el objeto y crean la sensación de que este último se encuentra en ese lugar que alguien fotografió anteriormente para la hacer la imagen HDRI. Este HDRI en particular fue realizado por Andreas Mischok y pueden conseguirla en Poly Haven.
While the Aquino made the final miles to head towards the Port of Cebu another ship was leaving the port, the Sulpicio Express 7, a container ship that was leaving for Dumaguete and that had to pass in front of the Aquino, to orient itself finally towards his destination. Here is a render of the Sulpicio Express 7 that I also modeled to recreate the incident.
Mientras el Aquino hacía las millas finales para enfilar hacia el Puerto de Cebú otro barco iba dejando el puerto, el Sulpicio Express 7 un buque portacontenedores que partía con rumbo a Dumaguete y que debía pasar por delante del Aquino, para orientarse finalmente hacia su destino. As Saint Thomas Aquinas advanced towards Cebu, the rush to reach the port where he would have to make a stopover to go to his last destination, the Port of Manila, was emphasized. Meanwhile the Sulpicio Express 7 continued its course towards the encounter with the Aquino. Shortly before eight o'clock at night the Sulpice made himself visible to the Aquino as she approached from the right (starboard). I should point out that at first glance Maya Autodesk can seem intimidating due to the large number of panels and toolbars that it presents (obviously Cinema 4d is much simpler), but after having little time with it you can get things done without getting lost in between the options. I may delve into it later.
Mientras el Santo Tomás de Aquino avanzaba hacia Cebú se enfatizó la prisa por llegar al puerto donde habría de hacer una escala para enrumbar a su último destino, el Puerto de Manila. Mientras tanto el Sulpicio Express 7 continuaba su curso acercándose al encuentro con el Aquino. Poco antes de las ocho de la noche el Sulpicio se hizo visible ante el Aquino mientras se aproximaba por la derecha (estribor). Les presento ahora una fotografía del Santo Tomás de Aquino en su última fase de creación. Debo señalar que a primera vista Maya Autodesk puede parecer intimidante debido a la gran cantidad de paneles y barras de herramientas que presenta (evidentemente que Cinema 4d es mucho más sencillo), pero después de tener poco tiempo con él puedes sacar los trabajos sin perderse mucho entre las opciones. Puede que más adelante profundice en él.
3d modeling is nothing more than shaping a primitive shape that the same program provides, usually a cube or a plane, from then on through subdivisions, extructions, cuts and other techniques you get what you want.
El modelado 3d no es más que darle forma a una forma primitiva que el mismo programa facilita, por lo general un cubo o un plano, de allí en adelante mediante subdivisiones, extrucciones, cortes y otras técnicas vas obteniendo lo que deseas.
However, the presence of the Sulpicio Express 7, the Captain of the Aquino maintained his speed hoping to pass in front of the container ship and save the time that would represent slowing his march until he stopped and waiting for the Sulpicio to pass in front of him as established by the regulations in maritime matters. I have made a render with the two ships at the moment in which the Captain of the Aquino has had to stop his march and await the passage of that one. This time I have not used HDRI image but I have taken advantage of the illumination of the sphere that I have already told you about and that surrounds the scene.
No obstante, la presencia del Sulpicio Express 7, el Capitán del Aquino mantuvo su velocidad esperando pasar por delante del portacontenedores y economizarse el tiempo que representaría ralentizar su marcha hasta detenerse y esperar a que el Sulpicio pasara delante de él tal como lo establecían las reglamentaciones en materia marítima. He hecho un render con los dos barcos en el momento en el que el Capitan del Aquino ha debido detener su marcha y aguardar el paso de aquel. En esta ocasión no he usado imagen HDRI pero he aprovechado la propia iluminación de la esfera de las que ya le he hablado y que rodea la escena.
At eight o'clock at night the Captain of the Aquino has fought in his reckless maneuver, however, his calculations will not bear the desired results and the ship will never finish passing in front of the Sulpice that is inexorably approaching. The ship would shake from the violent impact it would receive from the bow of the Sulpicío Express 7 when it was “mortally wounded” on the starboard side (right), in the aft area. One hundred people lost their lives in an event that would bring mourning to several families and that would add to the list of catastrophic accidents that have characterized navigation in the Philippines.
A las ocho de la noche el Capitán del Aquino se ha batido en su temeraria maniobra, sin embargo, sus cálculos no darán los frutos deseados y la nave jamás terminará de pasar por delante del Sulpicio que se acerca inexorablemente. La nave se estremecería por el violento impacto que recibiría de la proa del Sulpicío Express 7 al ser “herido de muerte” en el costado de estribor (derecha), en el área de popa. Here the incidence of artificial light on the model can be perfectly detailed (the original photo was a somewhat burnt effect that is inevitably reflected on the model).

Thus we culminate the first chapter of this series of 3D models. In the next one, I will introduce you to the next wrecked ship and we will delve more deeply into the renderings, types of renderings and other comparisons with photography itself.
