Hi everyone. This time I present another ship with a tragic history, the MV Smart. Like the previous models, I modeled this boat with Maya Autodesk for a series of video documentaries. The Smart was a vessel in the category of bulk carriers and as its name indicates, they were designed to transport bulk goods such as sorghum, wheat, corn or mining products such as coal or copper, among others. These ships have evolved practically at the same time as container ships or oil tankers, however, advances in their development have not prospered in terms of loading and unloading, since this is done using the cranes of the port or the cranes of the ship itself (when they have them) and the process is quite slow, and can last weeks.

Hola a todos. En esta oportunidad les presento otro barco con una historia trágica, el MV Smart. Al igual que los modelos anteriores, este barco lo modelé con Maya Autodesk para una serie de video documentales. El Smart era un buque de la categoría de los graneleros (bult-carrier) y como su nombre lo indica, fueron diseñados para transportar mercancías a granel como sorgo, trigo, maíz o productos mineros como carbón o cobre entre otros. Estos barcos han evolucionado prácticamente a la par de los buques portacontenedores o los petroleros, no obstante, los avances en su desarrollo no han prosperado en lo que respecta a su carga y descarga puesto que ello se realiza mediante las gruas del puerto o las propias de la nave (cuando disponen de ellas) y el proceso es bastante lento, pudiendo durar semanas.
In the case of the Smart we are talking about a bulk carrier entrusted to transport minerals. On August 19, 2013, it was loaded with one hundred and forty-seven tons of coal in the Port of Richard Bay, southeast Africa, but as the minutes passed a storm was forming and lashing the waters of the bay. In the morning hours the ship sailed. But in addition to the storm, another circumstance had an impact on the disaster that would occur minutes later: the lack of maintenance.
En el caso del Smart hablamos de un granelero encomendado al transporte de minerales. El 19 de agosto de 2013, era cargado con ciento cuarenta y siete toneladas de carbón en el Puerto de Richard Bay, al sureste de África, pero a medida que pasaban los minutos una tormenta se iba formando y azotaba las aguas de la bahía. En horas de la mañana el barco zarpó. Pero además de la tormenta, otra circunstancia incidió en el desastre que se presentaría minutos después: la falta de mantenimiento.
A boat requires arduous maintenance what should be done at least every five years, in addition to the small annual repairs. And maritime legislation requires that ships meet this requirement, at least in European countries and the United States, but in certain states such as the Bahamas or Panama, regulations are often breached to favor the shipowner who wants to get rid of the huge investment of repair their ship and meet the cumbersome requirements of their countries prefer to create a new registry in Panama and take advantage of the great permissibility of their authorities to even put a ship in deplorable navigability conditions.
Un barco requiere de un arduo mantenimiento que debe realizarse como mínimo cada cinco años, además de las pequeñas reparaciones anuales. Y la legislación en materia marítima es exigente en que las naves cumplan este requisito, al menos, en los países europeos y Estados Unidos, pero en ciertos estados como Bahamas o Panamá, las normativas suelen incumplirse considerablemente para favorecer al armador que queriendo zafarse de la enorme inversión de reparar su barco y cumplir los engorrosos requisitos de sus países prefieren crear un nuevo registro en Panamá y aprovechar la gran permisibilidad de sus autoridades para incluso poner a navegar una nave en deplorables condiciones de navegabilidad.
This was the reality of the Smart, a seventeen-year-old boat that had to be repaired urgently. So within minutes of leaving port she was hit by the strong waves of the typhoon. With a load of one hundred and forty-seven tons of coal and a hull weakened by the passage of the years, there was little chance that the ship would overcome the inclemency. Minutes later, her hull fractured and the ship was sinking in the area of the fracture, depositing her coal load on the seabed. Fortunately there were no human losses.
Esta era la realidad del Smart, un barco de diecisiete años que debía ser reparado de urgencia. De manera que pocos minutos después de dejar el puerto fue azotado por las fuertes olas del tifón. Con una carga de ciento cuarenta y siete toneladas de carbón y un casco debilitado por el paso de los años pocas eran las posibilidades de que la nave venciera la inclemencia. Minutos después el casco se fracturó y la nave fue hundiéndose en el área de la fractura depositando en el fondo del mar su carga de carbón. Afortunadamente no hubo pérdidas humanas.
Now, leaving aside the history of the Smart, we go on to review the use of two other tools in 3d modeling. As you already know, we are using Maya Autodesk. In the previous post we talked about the bevel tool, today we are going to deal with the Smooth tool, both do a similar function, smooth the edges of the object, but the first is used for specific areas (or basic objects) while the second is implemented to smooth the entire object.
Ahora bien, dejando de lado la historia del Smart, pasamos a revisar el uso de otras dos herramientas en el modelado 3d. Como ya saben, estamos utilizando Maya Autodesk. En el post anterior hablamos sobre la herramienta bisel, hoy vamos a tratar sobre la de Smooth (suavizado), ambas hacen una función parecida, suavizar los bordes del objeto, pero la primera se usa para zonas específicas (u objetos básicos) mientras que la segunda se implementa para suavizar todo el objeto.
The object in the preceding image is too complex to be smoothed with the bevel tool, so we will have to use smooth, however, when applying the tool we will obtain the result of the following image.
El objeto de la imagen precedente es demasiado complejo para ser suavizado con la herramienta bisel por lo que tendremos que utilizar smooth, sin embargo, al aplicar la herramienta obtendremos el resultado de la siguiente imagen.
Actually, it is not the result we are looking for, for this we will have to previously highlight the edges of our object for which we will use the knife tool.
En realidad, no es el resultado que buscamos, para ello tendremos que marcar previamente donde estarán los bordes de nuestro objeto para lo cual utilizaremos la herramienta de cuchilla.
And already having our edges perfectly determined we apply the Smooth tool

And this is the smoothing we want. On the other hand, the construction of objects may require several objects at the same time, we are talking about objects that we obtain from several others.
Y este es el suavizado que queremos.
Por otra parte, la construcción de objetos puede requerir de varios objetos a la vez, hablamos de objetos que obtenemos de otros varios.
In the image we have a pyramid. We need several of these to arrive at a final result.
En la imagen tenemos una pirámide. Necesitamos varias de estas para llegar a un resultado final.
We already have our object, but it is not yet a whole since each pyramid is still independent of the object they make up. For this we will select all the pyramids and go to the Combine tool.
Ya tenemos nuestro objeto, pero aún no es un todo ya que cada pirámide sigue siendo independiente del objeto que conforman. Para esto seleccionaremos todas las pirámides e iremos a la herramienta Combine (combinar).
And now the program will consider it as a single object.
Y ahora el programa lo considerará como un solo objeto.

In programs like 3d Max this tool does not work in the same way because there the objects are converted into a whole by means of the "Group" function. However, in Maya we also have another similar function which is that of "Parent" that we will see in the next post. This has been it. In the next post we will present another ship with a sad history and we will address other tools of 3d modeling.
En programas como 3d Max esta herramienta no funciona de la misma manera pues allí los objetos se convierten en un todo mediante la función de “Agrupar”. No obstante, en Maya también tenemos otra función parecida que es la de “Parent” que veremos en el siguiente post.
