Autoportrait,
Oil on canvas,
50 x 40
I would like to show You the way to create a cubist inspired portrait.
I am drawing inspiration from a well known cubist painter Pablo Picasso.
Cubism is art of different perspectives. Cubist artist will break down his motif, and paint it from various angles. In one painting you can see a single face shown "on face", from behind and its profile and at the same time!
Cubist painter also likes to show different emotional stages of person he is portraying. In famous Picasso's painting "The weeping woman", you can see a great example of combining different mental stages in one painting. Painter tried to show us all stages of sorrow within one piece. Because he does it so well, it is no wonder he became one of the most influential artists of the 20th century.

The weeping woman
MY CREATIVE PROCESS:
To start, I am drawing 2-minute sketches which will later on be redefined into cubist expression. The sketches are done in mixed media.
For further painting process, I will use the second drawing.
It is made in charcoal, in low light conditions, in order to achieve stronger light-dark contrast.
The next step is to break the face into sections, and to choose a color palette I will be using. I am going for pastel, warm colors which will later be interpreted as a candle light, in order to stimulate pleasant feelings within the viewer.
This is a photograph from my Artist dairy, a place where I do my preparations before actually starting with the painting process.
Strong base will ensure you get the best result! After transferring the original sketch to the canvas, all there is left is to paint!
And here is the final product;
Thank you for reading,
Have a wonderful day!
