I never imagined myself as a life model. The thought of standing in front of a room full of strangers, scrutinized from every angle, made me incredibly self-conscious.
At the time, along with my studies, I was also working as a part-time bartender, and I was always open to new experiences and "side hustles" to make some extra cash.
So when a customer, who turned out to be an art teacher, asked if I'd be interested in posing for his drawing and painting classes, I decided to give it a shot.
Nunca me hubiera imaginado que podría hacer de modelo de posado artístico. Sólo con pensar en estar rodeado de desconocidos, quieto y estático en medio de una habitación, siendo examinado desde todos los ángulos, me hacía sentir increíblemente cohibido.
Mientras estudiaba, también trabajaba de camarero y siempre estaba abierto a nuevas experiencias y "trabajos secundarios" para ganar un dinero extra.
Así que cuando un cliente, que resultó ser profesor de arte, me preguntó si estaría interesado en posar para sus clases de dibujo y pintura, decidí intentarlo.
At first, it was uncomfortable. But as time went on, I grew more comfortable in the role. I found it fascinating to watch the students analyzing my every curve and contour, trying to capture my likeness on paper or canvas. It even became meditative.
Al principio fue incómodo. Pero con el tiempo, me fui acostumbrando y sintiendo más a gusto. Me resultó fascinante ver a los estudiantes analizar cada una de mis curvas, mi contorno, tratando de capturar mi semblanza en papel o lienzo. Incluso se convirtió para mi en un momento de meditación.

One day, during a break, professor Majer asked us about our favorite painters and styles. I proudly proclaimed my love for the old masters and my distaste for abstract art that looks like child's play and is worth millions because of the right signature.
To my surprise, the teacher challenged me to create an abstract painting right then and there. I was nervous, but I accepted. I had never attempted anything like this before, and I felt like I was way over my head. I started using different colors and painted “something abstract”. Then with a little bit of his guidance “that something” turned into an interesting “piece of art”.
Un día, durante un descanso, el profesor nos interrogó sobre nuestros pintores y estilos favoritos. Con orgullo proclamé mi amor por los viejos maestros y mi desprecio por el arte abstracto, que, en mi opinión, parecía hecho por un niño y estaba sobrevalorado sólo por estar firmado por la persona adecuada.
Para mi sorpresa, ante mi respuesta, me desafió a crear una pintura abstracta en ese momento. Me puse nervioso, pero acepté. Nunca había intentado algo parecido, por lo que sentía que me había metido en aguas profundas sin saber nadar, pero comencé a utilizar diferentes colores y pinté “algo abstracto”. Paulatinamente, con sus consejos, ese "algo abstracto" se convirtió en una interesante "obra de arte".
That night, I went home, took pieces of paper that remained from my elementary school and overly-dried watercolors I had lying around, and something inside me "clicked". I remembered how much I loved using watercolors as a kid.
I started painting, letting my brush move across the paper in a series of broad strokes and splatters. It was messy and chaotic, but it felt liberating to let go of my inhibitions and just see where that led. Before I knew it, I had created my first couple of abstract paintings. That was it. I was hooked.
Esa noche, fui a casa, reuní varios trozos de papel que quedaban de mi escuela primaria, algunas acuarelas secas que tenía en casa, y algo dentro de mí hizo "click". Recordé cuánto me gustaba usar las acuarelas de niño.
Comencé a pintar, dejando que mi pincel danzara por el papel en una serie de pinceladas y salpicaduras amplias. Fue desordenado y caótico, pero me sentí liberado al dejar ir mis inhibiciones y simplemente crear. Antes de darme cuenta, había creado mis primeras pinturas abstractas. Y ya está. Estaba enganchado.
The next week, feeling both proud and nervous, I exhibited my paintings to the entire class. I felt a sense of satisfaction when everyone encouraged me to keep painting and exploring.
A la semana siguiente, con orgulloso y nervioso al mismo tiempo, mostré mis pinturas en clase. Mientras se las mostraba a todos, sentí una ola de satisfacción cuando todos me animaron a seguir pintando y explorando.
I continued experimenting with watercolors in the following weeks and months, painting more abstract pieces. I found that I enjoyed the process of creating something that was entirely my own.
Painting became a form of therapy, a way to release all the stress and anxiety that had been building up inside me.
Seguí experimentando con acuarelas en las siguientes semanas y meses, creando cada vez más piezas abstractas. Descubrí que disfrutaba del proceso de crear algo que era completamente mío.
La pintura se convirtió en una forma de terapia, una manera de liberar todo el estrés y la ansiedad que se habían acumulado dentro de mí en los últimos años.
Many years later, I can confirm that even if I never become a famous artist or sell any of my paintings, I'm grateful for what I've discovered.
Painting has become a passion that had been hiding inside me all along. It allows me to fully immerse myself in the present moment, free from the worries and stresses of everyday life. And for that, I'm truly grateful.
Muchos años después, puedo afirmar que, incluso si nunca me convierto en un artista famoso o vendo alguna de mis pinturas, estoy agradecido por lo haber descubierto este camino.
La pintura se ha convertido en una pasión que había estado escondida en mi interior y que me permite sumergirme completamente en el presente, libre de las preocupaciones y el estrés de la vida cotidiana. Y ya sólo por eso, estoy realmente agradecido.
