Quarantine times are an opportunity to build our skills and to invest time wisely. Of course the first few days we can get all the rest we can and enjoy ourselves but after that it is our responsibility to make the most out of these days. Instead of complaining and being fearful of the situation we can set goals and challenge ourselves to accomplish all of the things that we have been postergating because of our job or life itself. In our case, me and my wife have talked and set the following goals:
Start a monthly budget:
Right now our income was cut, so we have decided to spend money only on the things that are really necessary, this includes avoiding spending resources on desserts or unhealthy foods. Making a budget is very helpful if we want to know exactly where your money is going and this way we will be able to spend less than what we earn. We will dedicate at least four hours to make a template or document where we can put all the info and also at least one or two hours a week to review the information. This goal will be met by April 10.
Learning about marketing:
This is related to our next goal. We already have some knowledge on email marketing and social media marketing. We are planning to extend our services and pay for adds. To strengthen these skills we are using Platzi, an online education platform that has more than 300 courses about coding, design and marketing. We will invest one hour daily to learn this information and one to two hours to practice when we have enough information. We have alreasy started but we will finish at least one of the new courses by April 13.
Sell art commissions:
We have many options and alternatives to increase our income and one of them of course is #Hive but at the moment we are not going to sell coins (at least not in the next few days), another option is to develop and sell websites, but for that we need more information. I have talked with Gris and the thing that we can do right now without investing a lot of time or money is to sell illustrations. Of course they will be made by Gris and I'm going to help her in the marketing process. We have already sold two via PayPal and another through Bitso (the best Mexican Crypto Exchange).
The idea is to make ads in Facebook and Instagram so people can contact us, give more information and close the deal. To achieve this goal we may have to invest from six to eight hours to create all the example images and then from three to four hours daily to promote the commissions. Gris can make one or two drawings per day, maybe more, if we sell only one each day we will have enough money to cover our basic needs and to start saving, but we plan to make more.
We plan to start promoting the illustrations this weekend. We will try first in Mexico and if that does not go as planned we will focus in other countries like the US and UK. By April 15 we will have at least one campaign running.
Work in Social Projects from home:
Marina (@marpolaris), our roommate, is part of two important associations here in Guadalajara, she has invited Gris to be part of one of them and she has also been contributing to the other one with illustrations and designs. Right now they are working on a social project that they are going to make a proposition to the government, like this post is a type of contest. If they win, they could earn about half a million mexican pesos (~20,000 USD).
When I say they, I mean the whole team in the association, not just Marina and Gris. But that is very good news, Imagine the $Hive I could buy with that money... just kidding. I think that one of the first thing we would do is buy Gris better tools so she can make her illustrations more comfortable. Right now she is making all the drawings on her cellphone.
This goal is more for Marina and Gris and I have seen that they are dedicating around 8 hours per week, they are having reunions two times a week with the whole team. I can help by giving support and also with ideas. This is an ongoing project which goal should be met by April 30.
Those are our main goals right now and as you can see the focus is to build our income sources. For many of the things that we want to achieve we need money. We may have to move from this house and for that we need more money, if we want to buy our own things, we need money. We know that money is not everything and we are very thankful of the things that we have, we really appreciate our health, family and friends. We want to achieve more, we want to keep growing. We are happy, but we want to keep growing, as a couple, Gris as an artist and both as entrepreneurs. We don't want to work for anyone, we want to create our own income and opportunities, we want to be free.
