It sounds like a strange mix of animals to come together in the one post, I know...But believe it or not we found all three in the one location today...The Big Rocking Horse at Gumeracha in the Adelaide Hills.
Clearly that's the big rocking horse above...The worlds largest they say, but I'm not sure on that fact. It's big though, really big. If you take a look you'll see a chap in the platform on the horse's back and some people below...That gives it perspective I guess.
We started out this morning with the intention of taking advantage of some really great winter weather we're having and what better place to take my little nephew than a wooden toy factory, playground and petting zoo...All rolled into one!
After an hour in the playground zooming around on little cars and playing on the slide we ate some lunch and headed into the toy store/factory area for a look. Of course no self-respecting uncle would take his 22-month-old nephew into a toy store and not buy him something so I got him a really cool hand made wooden bulldozer...He says boo-doe-door in English but in Japanese says it really clearly. He loves bulldozers! (Yes, Japanese. He is bilingual as his mum is Japanese.)
From there we headed into the petting zoo to find some animals and came across this little kangaroo. The image above shows my nephew, his mum and Faith feeding and patting him. He was a cute little bugger, and really friendly.
The park has red and grey kangaroos, a couple different types of wallabies, possums, alpacas, goats, sheep, emu, cape barren geese, corellas, galahs, peacocks, sulfur crested cockatoos and loads of other things I can't remember. There's plenty to keep an inquisitive kid busy!
It costs nothing to use the playground or enter the store but is $2 per person to climb the big rocking horse, $2 each for entry to the animal park and $2 per bag of feed...Pretty good value I think.
The image above is my brother...He made a friend of this emu who didn't want to leave him alone! He followed him everywhere he went on that fence line and ignored everyone else. It was odd as I've never seen an emu do that before. I've got some really great pictures of the emu close up to his face, seemingly wanting a kiss, but it shows my brother's face really clearly so I'll have to blur them before I can show them here.
We had to break up the emu love-affair though as we wanted to head to Hahndorf, a small town in the Adelaide Hills settled by German immigrants back in 1839...It's an operating town still and a cool tourist place these days with loads of shops, wine-bars, cafes, restaurants, bakeries and stuff like that...Yes, we went to a bakery...No judgement ok? 😃
Today was a bit of a mixed bag of activities but my nephew had an awesome time and arrived home with a brand new bulldozer which he has been playing with since. The adults were all a bit worn out but we made sushi for dinner and had some awesome German cake with coffee for dessert. Legit.
And so ends another great day.
I hope y'all have had a great end to the week and are looking forward to the weekend. What have you got planned?
