In the past few weeks I've told you a couple of times about the new film (or TV series?) by the Coen brothers.
I hadn't done it in terms of quality, as I hadn't seen the film yet but I had mentioned how the advent of the Coen brothers on Netflix could be seen as an epochal change for 2 main factors:
For the first time a "serial" product had been put into competition at a big festival like the one in Venice.
The arrival of universally recognized filmmakers as reference points for 2 decades on Netflix and in the serial landscape
Speeches that went beyond the technical, visual and narrative rendering of their last effort.
The film won the award in Venice as best screenplay and in this hot November it finally arrived on the screens, the small ones in our house and not in the cinema.
A film that film is not, a series that series is not produced by Netflix, wins awards in Venice and arrives in our homes. If this is not a revolution?
The announcement that Netflix and Fargo's directors, Non è un paese per vecchi and other masterpieces would have collaborated was accompanied by the news about the format of the product that would be released.
Coen would have shot a western tv series!
So it wasn't. Or was it?
The series/film was released as a 130 minute film. This disorientated a lot of people but it was nothing compared to the bewilderment experienced while watching the film. It turned out to be a long collage of episodes from an anthological series that had the chaos of our lives and the West as the common setting.
A hybrid product that is not a film but a series either.
As always happens when faced with such overwhelming novelties, the bewilderment was strong with one part of the belly screaming scandal and another screaming genius.
With a cold mind it will certainly be easier to draw the necessary conclusions. For now what can be judged, with all the subjectivity of the case, is whether the experiment was successful or not.
Even here it is very difficult to be super partes being the Coen among the most divisive authors, there are those who love them and those who hate them and especially those who understand them and those who do not understand them. The last statement may seem strong, snobbish and arrogant but this is not the case. Their poetics, their filmography tells us that they are good, very good at telling life in a grotesque way. Those who do not love the grotesque, who do not appreciate the taste of the surreal behind the events of life will find it hard to understand them and therefore to appreciate or hate them. Understanding them is a pre-requisite to be able to discern them.
The episodic events recounted make the Coen's skill evident. The photography is impeccable, the dialogues as always witty and tight and the evolution of the stories as always does not generate chaos but is generated by chaos. The Coen's poetics has always been this and has been declined over the years in metropolitan dramas, glossy stories, small intimate or ordinary stories, but they have always had as a minimum common denominator the fate understood as random and apparently disconnected events that determine our destiny.
What would have happened, for example, if the little dog had really been shot down in one of the episodes of this series or what would have happened if one of the many gunmen had been more "loyal to duty" and less arrogant? Everything comes by chance from small events that trigger a huge and endless butterfly effect and this series is no exception. It's undeniably a Coenian script and this is important for both the understanding and the evaluation of the series.
The technical sector is divine with very long plans, American plans and close-ups worthy of Sergio Leone or John Wayne's films. The details of the costumes and settings are detailed and noteworthy, indeed impeccable.
Everything is perfect, in short, but at the end of the vision there is definitely something to write down.
For those who chew it is difficult to find a reason to define this film as serious. For those who chew it is difficult to define this series as a film.
It's a hybrid, an experimentation but it's also a product that seems to be too halfway. An episodic structure works when stories and characters converge, even if only tangentially, but they have to do so in order not to make the story frayed.
At the same time a film, however fragmented it may be, must follow a straight line from point A to point B.
If there is a criticism to be made it is this one and for many this will constitute an insurmountable defect, for others a welcome experimentation.
The ending is cryptic, very cryptic but seems too suspended not only for narrative purposes but for thematic ones. What would they have wanted to say? What details did we miss? Here too, for some it will be a pleasant open-ended ending on which to rewind our minds, for others a not insignificant problem.
Ballad of Buster Scruggs has made and will continue to make people talk about himself and for now he has passed the test widely and with full marks, even though
Nelle scorse settimane vi ho parlato in un paio di occasioni del nuovo film (o serie tv?) dei fratelli Coen.
Non lo avevo fatto in termini qualitativi, non avendo ancora visto il film ma avevo accennato a quanto l'avvento dei Coen su Netflix poteva essere visto come un cambio epocale per 2 fattori principali:
Per la prima volta un prodotto "seriale" era stato messo in concorso in un grande festival come quello di Venezia
L'approdo di cineasti universalmente riconosciuti come punti di riferimento da 2 decadi su Netflix e nel panorama seriale
Discorsi che esulavano dunque dalla resa tecnica, visiva e narrativa della loro ultima fatica insomma.
Il film ha vinto il premio a Venezia come miglior sceneggiatura ed in questo caldo Novembre è finalmente arrivato sugli schermi, quelli piccoli di casa nostra e non al cinema.
Un film che film non è, una serie che serie non è viene prodotta da Netflix, vince premi a Venezia e giunge nelle nostre case. Se non è rivoluzione questa?
All'annuncio che Netflix ed i registi di Fargo, Non è un paese per vecchi e altri capolavori avrebbero collaborato era stata affiancata la notizia sul format del prodotto che sarebbe stato rilasciato.
I Coen avrebbero girato una serie tv western!
Cosi non è stato. O forse si?
La serie/film è stata rilasciata come un film della durata di 130 minuti circa. Questo ha spiazzato tante persone ma non è stato nulla in confronto allo spaesamento vissuto durante la visione del film. Esso è risultato come un lungo collage di episodi di una serie antologica che aveva come filo rosso tematico il caos delle nostre vite e come ambientazione comune il West.
Un prodotto ibrido che film non è ma serie neppure.
Come sempre accade di fronte a novità cosi debordanti lo spaesamento è stato forte con una parte della pancia a gridare allo scandalo ed un altra a gridare alla genialata.
A mente fredda sarà sicuramente più facile trarre le dovute conclusioni. Per adesso quello che si può giudicare, con tutta la soggettività del caso è la riuscita o meno dell'esperimento.
Anche qui è difficilissimo essere super partes essendo i Coen fra gli autori più divisivi, c'è chi li ama e chi li odia e soprattutto chi li capisce e chi non li capisce. L'ultima affermazione può sembrare forte, snob e arrogante ma cosi non è. La loro poetica, la loro filmografia ci dice che loro sono bravi, bravissimi a raccontare in maniera grottesca la vita. Chi non ama il grottesco, che non apprezza il gusto del surreale dietro gli eventi della vita faticherà a capirli e dunque ad apprezzarli o detestarli. Capirli è un pre-requisito per poterli discernere.
Le vicende episodiche raccontate rendono palesi la bravura dei Coen. La fotografia è ineccepibile, i dialoghi come sempre arguti e serrati e l'evolversi delle storie come sempre non genera caos ma è generato dal caos. La poetica dei Coen è sempre stata questa ed è stata declinata negli anni in drammi metropolitani, storie patinate, piccoli racconti intimi o ordinari ma han sempre avuto come minimo comun denominatore il fato inteso come eventi casuali e apparentemente sconnessi che determinano il nostro destino.
Cosa sarebbe successo ad esempio se il cagnolino fosse stato abbattuto davvero in uno degli episodi di questa serie o cosa sarebbe avvenuto se uno dei tanti pistoleri fosse stato più "ligio al dovere" e meno arrogantello? Tutto nasce per caso da piccoli eventi che scatenano un effetto farfalla enorme e senza fine e questa serie non fa eccezione. E' innegabilmente una sceneggiatura coeniana e questo è importante ai fini sia della comprensione che della valutazione della serie.
Il comparto tecnico è divino con lunghissimi piani, piani americani e primissimi piani degni di Sergio Leone o dei film di John Wayne. I dettagli sui costumi e le ambientazioni sono particolareggiati e degni di nota anzi impeccabili.
Tutto perfetto insomma ma a fine visione qualcosa da appuntare c'è di sicuro.
Per chi di serie ne mastica è difficile trovare un motivo per definire serie questo film. Per chi di film ne mastica è difficile definire film questa serie.
E' un ibrido, una sperimentazione ma è anche un prodotto che sembra essere troppo a metà strada. Una struttura episodica funziona quando storie e personaggi convergono, anche solo tangenzialemente ma devono farlo per non rendere sfilacciato il racconto.
Al tempo stesso un film per quanto frammentato deve seguire una linea retta che lo conduca dal punto A al punto B.
Se c'è una critica da fare è questa e per molti questo costituirà un difetto insormontabile, per altri una gradita sperimentazione.
Il finale è criptico, molto criptico ma sembra troppo sospeso non solo a fini narrativi ma a fini tematici. Cosa avranno voluto dire? Quali dettagli ci siamo persi? Anche qui per alcuni sarà un piacevole finale aperto sul quale arrovellare le meningi, per altri un problema non di poco conto.
Ballad of Buster Scruggs ha fatto e continuerà a far parlare di se e per adesso supera ampiamente e a pieni voti la prova pur lasciando in sospeso il giudizio per quanto concerne la sua struttura narrativa ed alcune scelte di trama che soprattutto sul finale fanno perdere i pezzi anzichè unirli.
Netflix da par suo mette a segno un altro colpo da maestro assestando la propria leadership nel panorama seriale e legittimandosi come protagonista a tutto tondo nell'arte audiovisiva contemporanea.
