Our new Christmas tradition: the Elf on the shelf
Since we moved to Canada, the Elf on the Shelf was brought to my attention: It is a popular Christmas tradition, particularly in North America. The tradition involves a small elf doll that has been sent by Santa Claus to watch over children and report back on their behavior during the holiday season.
Usually, on December 1st the Elf arrives at the house, bringing a letter from Santa.
Families are encouraged to give the elf a name, which will give him the power to fly to the North Pole and come back every night.
The elf's primary role is to observe the behavior of the children and each night, the elf returns to the North Pole and reports to Santa Claus about the day's activities.
That way, the elf is to be found in a new location by the next morning.
The fun part is that the Elf usually hides or does some shenanigans, and the kids wake up excited to discover what the elf did the previous night.
Of course, there is the “No Touching Rule”: children are not supposed to touch the elf. Otherwise, the elf might lose its magic. So we use gloves or towels to get the Elf and put it under the Xmas tree so he “recovers” his energy.
On Christmas Eve, the elf gets back to the North Pole to help Santa deliver the gifts.
This year I decided to mix up a bit of activities we could do as a family and some fun tricks from the Elf.

Previously, Elf organized a scavenger hunt and left a gingerbread cookie kit.
We took an afternoon to decorate the cookies as a family activity.
Elf wraps up the gifts and leaves a goodbye note.
It is quite a job and demands creativity to play around during the 24 nights without the kid seeing the “Elf” accidentally around the house.
Our son already knows the truth, but he keeps asking for the Elf, and as I think it is fun and a way for us to play with him, I will try my best to keep it.
Also, it ends up adding a touch of magic and excitement to the Christmas season.

Nossa nova tradicao Natalina: The Elf on the Shelf
Desde que nos mudámos para o Canadá, chamaram-me a atenção para o Elf on the shelf: Trata-se de uma tradição natalícia popular, sobretudo na América do Norte. A tradição envolve um pequeno boneco elfo que foi enviado pelo Pai Natal para vigiar as crianças e informar sobre o seu comportamento durante a época festiva.
Normalmente, no dia 1 de dezembro, o duende chega a casa, trazendo uma carta do Pai Natal.
As famílias são encorajadas a dar um nome ao duende, que lhe dará o poder de voar até ao Pólo Norte e retornar todas as noites – por isso ele aparece em lugares diferentes da casa, e sempre com alguma brincadeira envolvendo ele : A parte divertida é que o duende geralmente se esconde ou faz algumas travessuras, e as crianças acordam animadas para descobrir o que o duende fez na noite anterior.
É claro que existe a "regra de não tocar » o boneco, caso contrário, ele perde a sua magia. Por isso, usamos luvas ou toalhas para pegar o boneco e colocá-lo debaixo da árvore de Natal para que ele "recupere" a sua energia.
Na véspera de Natal, o duende retorna ao Pólo Norte para ajudar o Pai Natal a entregar os presentes.
Este ano decidi misturar um pouco de atividades que pudéssemos fazer em família e algumas brincadeiras divertidas. Vamos conhecer o Spike? Aqui estão algumas fotografias das nossas travessuras nos últimos 24 dias.

É um trabalho e tanto e exige muita criatividade para brincar durante as 24 noites sem que a crianca não veja o "Elfo" acidentalmente pela casa.
O nosso filho já sabe a verdade, mas continua a pedir pelo Elfo, e como acho que é divertido e uma forma de brincarmos com ele, vou tentar fazer o possível para o manter a tradicao.
Além disso, acaba por dar um toque de magia e emoção à época natalina.
