I’d like to talk about the essence of Moldova, prices, and the gap between the rich and the poor.
Officially, the average salary here is considered to be 8,000–9,000 MDL ($444–500), with a minimum wage of 3,200 MDL ($177). BUT in reality, things aren’t as bright as they may seem. These salaries might be true, but mainly for those working in offices, holding high positions, and even then, this is just their official salary.
Poorer people—whether they have diplomas or not but haven’t found a job in their field, often because they worked abroad or were simply unlucky—get by on around 4,000 MDL ($222) per month.
• Would you agree that there’s a huge difference between $500 + an unofficial income of about the same and a total of just $222?
Moldova talks about soon raising the average salary to 10,000 MDL ($555), but let’s not forget why this increase is happening and what’s causing it. The main reason is the rising cost of gas (from 5 MDL to 15.40 MDL), heating, electricity, services, and food. On one hand, salaries may be going up, but on the other, the standard of living is not just stagnant—it’s getting worse.
Winter brings terrible utility bills—2,000 MDL just for heating (and if the heating system runs on gas, the bills are even worse).
Transportation
You can simply look at what the rich and the poor drive, and everything becomes clear. Guess for yourself who uses which type of transport!?
Real Estate
In villages and suburban areas, you can buy a house for €500 with a 200 m² plot.
Meanwhile, an apartment in the city costs €175,000 for 121 m².
Do you think these people legally and officially earned enough to afford such houses, cars, and positions?
Strangely enough, in Moldova, it’s not businesspeople or entrepreneurs who earn the most—it’s officials, judges, and prosecutors.
Recently, Moldova was shocked by the news of a judge purchasing a “modest” car.
“A Maybach worth over €1,000,000 has arrived in Moldova.
The cost of the wheel rims alone on five of these cars (except for the one in the lower-left corner), which are an additional option, ranges from €5,000 to €6,500! And if some of the cars wrapped in covers turn out to have a two-tone paint job, just that option alone could cost an extra €15,000.”
That’s the reality—the rich are getting richer, while the poor are getting poorer and leaving Moldova in search of a better life!
