After more than three inches of rain fell earlier in the week, men working on No 7 Pantglas Tip(coal mine) arrived at work at 7.30 am. On arrival they discovered a 30 foot crater had developed in the centre of the tip.
Just after 9 in the morning, as school children had sat down at their desks, the tip began to move. Within seconds thoisands of tonnes of coal slurry(waste material) rolled down the hillside. It killed livestock, covered some walkers on the canal bank, smashed through 8 terraced houses in Moy Road, before it buried the local school and all the children inside.

The daye was 21st of October, 1966. A day that still brings back haunting memories for those that survived and the parents that outlived their children.
144 people had their lives ripped from them that morning, 116 of them young children. Theres been plenty written about that fateful morning; reports, policies and poems. It took the UK government several days to even acknowledge this disaster, and for that, some people of wales still hold a rotten taste in their mouths for the Westminster government.
So what proce did the people of Wales oay for coal - the answer starts eith 116 innocent children!

The ground shook and villager from all over the small valley community knew something bad had happened. Miners in the local collery dropped all work tools and ran the few miles, shovels in hand, to aid the recovery of their children, their friends children, their neighbours children. The community rallied, the whole of south Wales rallied and they managed to save a lucky few, but they now have to live with the horrors of what they witnessed.
Im so glad my children will never have to go down the pits or are at risk of similar disasters. One life was more than what was needed for change to takenplave, but changes did take plave and massive slag-heap clearups across all of the welsh vallies started.
So remember the people and children that lost their lives in order to force the changes i now see.
