Hi Hivers, there are so many situations we humans must rein in ourself with self control, this is because with the possession of a strong self control makes us avoid a lot of mistakes made or crimes committed that could have been avoided, but lack of self control or weak self control can make us impulsive, shortsighted or insensitive to the people around us, due to our inability to rein-in or control our emotions.
Self Control is the ability to Regulate our thoughts, emotions and behaviors and alter our immediate responses to situations to prevent undesirable circumstances.
In a book titled “A General Theory of Crime” written by Micheal Gottfredson and Travis Hirschi says that self control is the differential tendency of individuals to avoid committing a crime notwithstanding whatever situation or circumstances they find themselves.
A lot of Situations and Pain could have been avoided if someone had reined in their emotions.
Strengthening the reins of self control would be of great benefits us cause it would make us Self Assertive, Self Preserved and Self Fulfilled.
- Self Assertive: When you know your self worth and value, you would be able to express yourself strongly and confidently.
- Self Preserved: We would be able to focus on our Needs rather than our Wants, so even if you indulge you don’t do it in excess, preventing us from developing destructive behaviors.
- Self Fulfilled: Your actions or reactions becomes a source of joy to you.
Although some scientists and researchers have said that possession of self control is partly genetic, I don’t believe it and even if it’s true Genetically Mutate yourself by not letting go of that rein until it becomes one with you when you don’t give in, as it is not over until it is over so don’t take any chances that could lead to Self Destruction.
Research have shown that those who have self control tends to live a healthier and happy life.
We all know that there are various things that can help us strengthen the reins of our self control, although the possession of willpower is included some other aspect needs to be checked.
- Plan ahead and locate your weak points or anything that can make you loose control in any situation or circumstance. Then think of ways to tie the loose ends of your self control.
For example if looking at his face would make you punch him in the face, then don’t look at his face or just walk away.
- Think of the consequence of failing to hold on to that control, this would give you the motivation of having a rein over your impulses and emotions, as a minute lack of control can lead to dangerous situations.
- Being inactive for more than 10 minutes is not advisable as being active makes your body release GABA (Gamma-Aminobutyric Acid) which is a neurotransmitter that soothes the brain which makes the control of emotions a whole easier for you .
- Getting sufficient rest is also important as tired brain cells lacks the ability to absorb glucose, of which without glucose the brain ability to control impulses is zero.
Ever wondered why you are edgy after a sleepless or restless night, well now you know why. So make sure you get sufficient rest.
- Daily self reflection is also advisable as this makes you take notice of subconscious actions, as the subconscious is the weak point of every control. Meditation can also help in correcting your subconscious actions.
- When training your subconscious do not focus on it alone do it all through to the tiniest bit of things, to make it balance.
Although self control is important in maintaining healthy behaviour, overemphasising can be damaging, so try and keep it balanced.
It also doesn’t mean we should be rigid by knowing when the rein should be tightened or loosen, self control is about striking a balance of not being rigid or impulsive.
So hivers lets continue to have fun and not be a bore, but don’t forget to pull in the reins.
