Side Quest: Burst of Motivation to Clean Bathroom and Kitchen
I had a side quest while studying and ended up cleaning my bathtub, kitchen sink, and toilet this afternoon. This happens to me sometimes. When I’m doing one thing, I suddenly feel motivated to do something else, especially cleaning.
After cleaning, especially around the bathroom and kitchen, I can finally focus on my work. The same thing happens when I go for a quick walk. I always feel much, much better after getting fresh air.
Hmm… I couldn’t do this if I were working in an office or stuck in a school building all day. I definitely prefer self-study or working from home. After feeling super refreshed and everything is clean, I have the motivation to go back to what I was originally doing.
Watching my dog, I think he has a similar habit to me. Or maybe I have a similar habit to him? Either way, I felt way better after cleaning the bathroom and kitchen. It’s interesting how touching water and hearing the sound of it always makes me feel better.
For example, swimming, taking a shower, or having a bath also helps me feel so much better. My concentration levels definitely go up afterward. So, if I had a swimming pool, river, lake, or ocean near my house, that would be the perfect setup for working from home.
The lake is the closest option for me here. However, it freezes in winter, so I can’t go swimming there now. I used to dream of having my own seasonal private swimming pool with a spa at home. But then… who would clean the pool and spa? If I had to clean them myself, I wouldn’t have time to relax there. Hahaha. It’s probably better to just enjoy nature instead.
Since I always feel recharged after touching water, I believe it helps reset my natural energy. I thought about the deeper meaning of touching water and feeling good, and these are some possibilities.
・Emotional Depth – Water symbolizes emotions. Being drawn to it means I'm sensitive and intuitive.
・Cleansing & Healing –Water refreshes and purifies my energy, helping me reset.
・Intuition & Subconscious – It’s linked to dreams and instincts, enhancing my inner wisdom.
・Flow & Adaptability – I value flexibility and prefer going with the flow.
・Past Life or Elemental Connection – I may have a spiritual tie to water from a past life or astrology.
・Freedom & Expansion – Large bodies of water reflect my need for space and connection to something greater.
・Inner Reflection – Water mirrors life, helping me gain clarity and focus.
When I was young, whenever I felt overwhelmed, I would go swimming. After a few hours in the water, my senses would calm down a lot. I often used to see my grandmother at the public swimming pool. I wonder if she felt the same way. That’s how I learned that touching water helps me reset from overwhelming feelings.
My mother used to say something similar when I was young. She said that after cleaning the toilet and kitchen, she always felt better. I might have picked up this habit from her as well. Many Japanese people believe that there is a god in the toilet, so you have to be mindful and keep your bathroom clean. I think I completely understand that concept.
Anyway, I have to get back to studying after all!

水回りの掃除のスイッチが突然入る
勉強していると、突然、お風呂のバスタブや台所のシンク、トイレなどの水回りの掃除のやる気スイッチが入ります。わりと頻繁に起こる衝動です。何かをしていると、全く別のことにやる気がわいてしまうのです。特に掃除関係が多い気がします。
水回りの掃除を終えると、また仕事に戻る気満々になります。短い散歩なんかもいい気分転換になります。
うーん。会社や学校などの建物の中にいなくてはならない状態の場合は、こんなふうに掃除で気分転換することはできません。だからこそ、自己学習や在宅勤務が好きです。キレイになったお風呂やトイレ、台所をみると気分が変わります。モチベーションがアップして、元々やっていたことがはかどります。
わたしの犬を見ていると、同じような感じがします。わたしが犬に似ているとも言えますね。自分にとって水回りの掃除は最高の気分転換方法なのだと思います。水を触ったり、水の音を聞くと、とても気分が安らぐのです。
たとえば、水泳やシャワー、お風呂なんかも同じような効果を感じます。集中力がかなりアップします。プール、川、湖や海が家の近くにあることで、自宅での仕事ぶりが上がるでしょう。
今の家は、湖がいちばん近いですが、冬の間は凍ってしまうので泳ぎにはいけません。昔、自宅用の温泉プールがある家に住む夢を持っていたことがあります。でも、いったい誰が掃除をしてメンテナンスをするのでしょうか…。掃除が大変すぎて、ゆっくり泳ぐ暇などなさそうです。そうなると、掃除の必要がない自然の水場の方が断然便利です。
水に触れることでいつもリラックスできるのだと思います。なぜ水に触れると、気分が変化するのかいろいろとあげてみたいと思います。
・感情の深さ：水は感情を象徴しているそうです。水に惹かれるということは、敏感で直感的な部分が自分にあるのではないかと思います。
・クレンジングとヒーリング：水はエネルギーを浄化してリフレッシュしてくれて、リセットの手助けになる。
・直感と潜在意識：水は夢と本能とつながっていて、内なる知恵を高めてくれる。
・フローと適応力：水は柔軟性を高めてくれて、流れに身を任せることができる。
・過去生と要素とのつながり：過去生とか占星術で、水とのつながりがあるのかもしれない。
・自由と広大さ：広大な水域は、自分を宇宙やもっともっと大きなものとのつながりを反映してくれる。
・内省：水は自分の人生の鏡で、明瞭さと集中力を高める手助けとなる。
昔、何かに圧倒されて困った時はよく泳ぎに行きました。単純に数時間自由に泳ぐと、自然と気持ちが治ってくるのを感じました。偶然、よく祖母と市民プールで出くわすことがありました。祖母もそうだったのでしょうか。水は自分の気持ちを落ち着かせてくれるいい手段でした。
母もよく昔同じようなことを言っていたと思います。トイレや台所の水回りを掃除するとスッキリするのだそうです。おそらく、母から自然に学んだのでしょうか。日本ではトイレには神様がいるから、日頃からキレイにしておくものだと言いますよね。わたしはその概念に賛成です。
さて、また勉強に戻ることにします。
