It took me a while to watch Netflix's old guard and boy was it good. I mean, mindlessly good but the entire show does feel like a real-life first-person shooter.
A bit of a background
So old guard is about a team of warriors or if you would like to call them, old guard. They are a group of individuals who are born with the unique ability to regenerate and live forever. Their body regenerates from cuts and they can withstand a crazy amount of punishment. This makes them virtually invulnerable. Of course, throughout the show, they start to realize the deeper meaning of an infinite lifespan.
Without spoiling too much, I'll leave it to you to check it out.
The FPS bit
In most of the scenes, you can see the old guard soaking up bullets and cuts like they are part of a high-health FPS game. One of them even recovers from being hit by a grenade, which is normally a done deal in any Call of duty or counterstrike games.
Even if the punishment dished out at them was enough to "kill" them, they will eventually heal pretty quickly and be back in action before you know it. This resembles the respawn element of any FPS game and while it is pretty cool, I think the writers could have done so much more with the show that could have made it better.
Perhaps incorporate some FPS elements in the show?
I think the regeneration and respawning of the old guard is an element that can be developed further. Imagine how in some games after you have come back from the dead, you lose all your items and abilities, I imagine that would be pretty interesting. What if when they resurrect, they lose their memories? That would add a layer of mystery as to who they really were in the past.
Of course, in the show, some of them have full memories as to who they were hundreds, if not thousands of years before. Another element that can be incorporated would be very Japanese-Anime-ish in a sense. Imagine if their regenerative abilities is a choice and they could choose between regenerating or utilizing a superpower. Perhaps they could go super strength or super speed when they are nearing death?
Conclusion
Regardless of my crazy thoughts on the show, I still think that it is well worth a watch. While the plot can be rather predictable, I think this is a great show to watch purely for the action. However, if you are looking for a deeper storyline, you may be a bit disappointed. That being said, I enjoyed it and the use of some melee weapons was a nice added bonus to the show.
