The first thing you might notice is that I am trying out a new community for this post. The one I have been using is pretty much filled with just my posts and I really want these posts to land in a place where people will appreciate them.
The post this week is going to be rough, I am going to tell you that right now. Besides one artist, I honestly can't remember who else I listened to this week. I was so enthralled with this bull run that I wasn't really paying attention to what I was clicking on in Spotify.
Perhaps as I muddle through this post it will all come back to me. In fact, I already remember now one of the artists I wanted to highlight.
So let's get to it!
If you have been following me for any amount of time, besides the fact that I am a huge Taylor Swift fan you have probably figured out that I am also a big fan of "Yacht Rock". Yacht rock is categorized as that soft pop sound from the late seventies and early eighties made famous by the likes of James Taylor, Steely Dan, Christopher Cross, Michael McDonald, America, etc.
It never fails that when I get to the end of one of my Yacht Rock playlists and Spotify has to figure out what I want to listen to next, they eventually play something by Paul Carrack. Believe it or not, I had no clue who this guy was. I knew I liked the sound, so I finally decided to do some digging the other day.
What an idiot I am!
Ace, Roxy Music, Squeeze, Mike + The Mechanics, Roger Waters, it seems there isn't anyone that Paul Carrack has not been involved with. He even did some session work with The Smiths and The Pretenders.
As soon as I started reading off those names, everything started to click into place. The song "How Long" by Ace began running through my head and it all made perfect sense to me.
Thinking back now, it is very possible I saw him on tour with Ringo Starr back in the early 2000's. I know I saw Ringo twice, but I can't remember all of the talent he had with him on each of the tours.
In any event, Paul Carrack is definitely worth digging into.
Speaking of the Pretenders, for some reason this week I got thinking about the show on SyFy network called The Magicians. It is based on the book(s) by Levi Grossman. If you have watched the later seasons of the show, you know how important this song is.
I am a huge fan of the show, it is pretty raunchy and irreverent at times, but it is also very real on some level even though it is dealing with magic and other fantasy type stuff. I started reading the books, but I am not a fast reader, so it has been a slow process.
Anyway, I am also a fan of The Pretenders, but thinking of this song really made me dig into their stuff this past week.
Talk about a long and prolific career. These folks have been rocking for a long time and they have the catalog to prove it. It is going to take me several weeks to sift through all of their stuff and hand pick the non top 40 gems that I want to add to my go-to playlist.
Alright, that is all I have for you this week. Usually I like to share three things I have been listening to, but this week you only get two because I need to get back to watching the price of BTC go up up up!
If you have been listening to something awesome this week let me know about it in the comments. I love learning about new (to me) artists. Better yet, write your own post about it and use the #weeklyspins tag!
