Many of you might be surprised where I am going to take you with the music selections this week. They are very different from what I have shared with you over the past couple of months. Since I like such a wide variety of music you never quite know what you are going to get from me. Just wait, next week you might get showtunes!
Sirius/XM has been doing their top 500 lists over the past year or so. My wife and I picked up the lists with their top 500 country songs last summer and we have been following some of the other lists since then.
Monday my wife and I had to drive to work separately, so Tuesday when I got in her car to go to work I was surprised to see the radio on channel 42. That isn't a channel we usually listen to, so I was curious to see what she had been jamming to once I pulled the car out of the garage and we had signal again.
To my absolute delight, right now on Sirius/XM channel 42 they are counting down the top 500 Hip/Hop songs.
So here is what I have been listening to this week:
I will be honest and say I missed pretty much all of the rap scene in the late 90's/early 2000's. Probably what many would consider one of the golden ages of rap.
In fact, the song above was probably my first introduction to this style of rap music and it didn't even come out until 2009! How far behind the times I was!
I like the groove on this one. All you have to do is flip through my blog to see that I am the furthest thing from a thug you can imagine. Jamming to this song makes me feel like one though :)
I can absolutely attribute my fondness for this type of music to my wife. While I was spending the 90's and 2000's probably listening to country or grunge, she was living a different life two cities away. She knows all of the artists from this era, but she is especially fond of a couple. Ma$e is one of them.
Ma$e ran with a pretty famous crew on Bad Boy Records. While he wasn't as well known as Puff Daddy or The Notorious BIG he was still very talented.
The amount of skill coming from the East coast makes it easy to see why there was some jealousy and competition on the West.
Another one of my wife's favorites is DMX. She was a really big fan of the Ruff Ryder's. I actually just saw there is a documentary on BET about the Ruff Ryder's and I plan on taping it so my wife and I can watch it.
Listening to the top 500 countdown has been really fun, especially when old songs like this come on. Sadly, I have noticed that there have been a large number of Drake songs in the countdown. He is one of the few artists that I personally can't stand.
I would much rather listen to the "old school" gangster style rap like this.
Anyway, this is what I have been listening to. It appears the YouTube videos are more edited than I thought, so if you were specifically looking for explicit language I apologize.
Maybe in the future I will find some more gems for you!
