I am not sure why, but this past Monday I woke up and I thought to myself, "I haven't listened to the Beatles in a long time". Part of it might have been the fact that the first song below was stuck in my head. Actually, I am guessing that is most of it.
Believe it or not, I was never really a huge Beatles fan in my younger years. Sure, I knew about them and I knew most of their hit songs (so many of them!), but I never really "listened" to them if you know what I mean.
That phase probably didn't start until my late twenties that I really started to delve into their music. There is a book called "A Hard Day's Write" and if you are a Beatles fan, I recommend you check it out. It is basically the story behind every single one of their songs. Believe it or not far fewer of them are about drugs than you would actually think. Especially their later stuff!
If I had to pick a top ten favorite Beatles songs, this one would definitely be in the list. If you gave me the impossible task of picking my top five, it would probably make that list as well. It is just a really good song.
There is something sweet yet melancholy about it. Not quite as depressing as "A Day in the Life", but still very somber. It's one of those that can really get the gears grinding in your head if you are in the right frame of mind.
It is very hard to pick, but Rubber Soul is probably one of my favorite Beatles albums. It sits right up there with Revolver and Help. I probably shouldn't even go down that road, because then I start thinking about Let it Be, Sgt. Pepper, and all of the others and I realize I probably don't have even a handful of favorite Beatles albums.
This is another pretty mellow song. I just dig it. No reason. It is just a good tune. If I had been thinking I would have brought that book with me so I could have given you the down low on this track.
I forgot to mention that Sirius/XM has a Beatles channel. It is channel 18, so you can probably guess that is what we were listening to on our way into work on Monday.
I have never actually seen any numbers, but I would guess a large percentage of the Beatles songs are about love or a woman or some combination of those two things. Except maybe "Hide your love away". I am pretty sure that is about love and a man.
That's beside the point though.
This is just another great example of a really good song.
I really thought I was going to have more to say about each of these songs, but as I got playing them, I think they speak for themselves. There is just something timeless about the Beatles that doesn't need to be muddled up with lots of useless words.
Finally, I thought I would throw this one in there just for fun. Walk off the Earth is a really talented group of musicians from Canada. I think they kick around the Toronto area, but I know they have done some touring around the globe when that was possible.
They do a lot of creative covers and mashups of songs. This right here is a Beatles medley. You should definitely check out some of their other stuff on YouTube if you have never heard of them.
So that is what I have been listening to this week. If you have been listening to something really awesome, leave a comment and let me know about it. Better yet, write your own post and use the #weeklyspins tag!
