Everyone knows how messy a fashion home can get, especially when it's time to cut fabric.
The once-organized workshop can change within a twinkle of an eye, and if left unattended, it can disrupt productivity for the rest of the day.
How do I stay organized as a fashion designer?
I have sorted out tips to help me stay organized, despite how messy my workshop can be every day.
I ensure that each item has its place in my workshop. I have containers for my buttons, zippers, and threads, and I have a specific place for keeping my scissors. Tape measures even down to my tailor's chalk.
This helps me to stay productive and organized, as I wouldn't be looking for different items that could sap me of my time and energy for the day, and as soon as I finish making use of them, I ensure I don't just drop them anywhere my hands take them, but rather to their specific place, which has helped me to stay organized.
Since most times I have leftover fabrics, which are usually known as pieces, I also have a basket where all of them are kept because nothing goes to waste as a very good designer.
One day, those pieces could be used to create something beautiful; it's all in the mind.
After cutting each day, I do not hesitate to sweep the dirt off immediately, clean my work table, and oil my sewing machine. This routine has made it easier to sew right after cutting, as I still have a clean space for creativity and productivity.
Every Monday, I use it for a major cleaning routine, where I ensure to sweep every nook and cranny of my office, take out the things I do not need, and keep the ones that will still be useless later in life. For the items I feel I do not need, I either sell them off to other designers who might need them, or sometimes I just give them out as a gift.
This has helped me to have a clean and safe space for sewing. One thing about a clean space is that, naturally, fresh air just comes in as there is a lot of space in the office to accommodate people and other useful items.
This also applies to my home. I have a place for keeping each item; my combs, shoes, clothes, bags, and wigs all have their own space, and whenever I feel like my room is becoming choked up, I declutter to create more space to stay organized.
As soon as I finish washing my clothes, I ensure to iron them in advance and hang them neatly so that they come in handy when I need them.
This applies to everywhere in my house, my kitchen, my toilet, and my bathroom. Each item in the said places has its items neatly arranged in a specific place, so I don't go about looking for them, but I have a thorn in my flesh. My cousin has the habit of taking stuff and never returning it to their place, and I find it very frustrating. I have been constantly teaching him how to stay organized by reminding him to ensure he keeps things back exactly where he finds them, and so far he's been trying his best, but truth be told, he still needs to do better.
This is my response to this prompt;
What are your tips and tricks for staying organized at home or work? Do you have a colour-coding system for your files? A hidden storage solution for your overflowing junk drawer? Maybe a specific cleaning routine that keeps chaos at bay?
