Hive Ghana!! Are you kidding me?
It will always be a dog and this is my entry.
I had a dog; it was a little German Shepherd.
I inherited it from Grandpa. Though we didn't know that we would have to sell it later.
On a faithful day, we went to Grandpa’s place. Though he is dead now, Grandpa had a mother dog, but on that day she was taken away from her puppies, and we picked one of them. I named it Bingo because I had a bond with the song
There was a farmer had a dog,
And Bingo was his name-o.
B-I-N-G-O!
B-I-N-G-O!
B-I-N-G-O!
And Bingo was his name-o. and Bingo was his name-o.
I can’t complete it here because of copyright issues 😀, but I had always dreamed of naming a dog Bingo—and finally, I did 😂.
Bingo was really small, but it preferred to stay with us. It would leave its cage and lie on our bed. Back then, I was just a little kid. However, my mum would send it out. To her, dogs were meant to live outside.
She would say, “My parents never lived with dogs, my father never lived with dogs, so this dog cannot stay with us… not in my house.”
Bingo was sometimes scared of my mum. At some point, it even barked at her. Bingo never barked at us, though. However, my mum didn’t like dogs.
Bingo had a pink tongue that made it look like a teddy bear—ha ha ha 😂. It was usually scared of water. I remember its evening baths; I even had a special toothbrush just for bingo.
Soon, Bingo became an aggressive dog—not towards us, but towards strangers. I remember the day I took it outside; it was really, really scared. Its tail was tucked between its hind legs. Bingo barked a lot, and the people around us always complained about the noise. They said it was too loud. They reported it to the landlady, and her advice was that we either leave the house or sell the dog.
During Bingo’s time, no one—absolutely no one—dared to steal from our house. Bingo didn’t even have to see you; it was very sensitive. Some days, it barked for no reason, and I feel those days it just wanted company.
There were days Bingo would break its chains. One day, it broke free and chased an elderly woman out of the compound. Though Bingo never bit unless commanded, I remember a day someone greeted “Salam Alaikum,” and the dog instantly reacted, chasing the man away. It responded to any strange sound.
Bingo was a caring dog. It always wagged its tail when we returned from school. Bingo was not just a pet; it was a guard and a friend. It loved bones—fish bones, meat bones—but I preferred giving it meat and milk 😂.
Bingo was soon sold to one Mr. Agbola. It never expected such a betrayal from us. I can still remember the last view 🪟 of Bingo from the window. Bingo… I can’t cry 😢😭😭😢—only smile at the memories. There were days Bingo would bow at every movement we made. Every run with it was fun 😊. I miss his welcoming sigh and the way it would prostrate to greet us. It made us smile. There were days it killed rats and other predators that disturbed us. Bingo was a smart dog.
After bingo left, there were different attacks here and there—not in our apartment, but in the apartments of those who were against the dog in the first place 😢. They soon realized that the dog had protected them. Someone lost a bike, another lost a car engine, others lost money, phones, and many more things—to thieves.
The breed of dog I like most is the German Shepherd. Come on, German Shepherds are cool 😎 and dangerous—but trainable.
Apart from dogs, I can manage cats. But no matter what, a dog will always be the father of all pets in my mind.
Bingo, I miss you. If you were alive now, I would ask for you to come back to me.
Bingo, my friend.
Hmm! Here is my thought about dogs:
> Dogs are kind; dogs are cool. Dogs respond when called. They can be carried wherever we want. Dogs play, dogs cry, dogs are protectors, dogs are beautiful, and dogs are caring. Dogs have listening ears. They know when we are in pain; they feel our joy when we are happy. Dogs fight back when we are in trouble. Dogs smile when we are near; they become lonely when we are gone. They are the face of many, the ears of many, and the detectors of many. Without dogs, mankind would be partially in pain.
