From preschool to university, students are given so many subjects to learn. Some people say it’s all part of getting a well-rounded education, but honestly, I sometimes wonder if all these courses are truly necessary. Do we really need to study everything that is on the curriculum? For me, the answer is no. Not all of them are needed, and some can even be merged or removed completely.
Let’s start with the ones I believe are important. Subjects like English, Mathematics, and Science are the backbone of education. They help shape how we think and solve problems. Without good communication skills, basic maths, or knowledge about how the world works, life would be harder. Even subjects like Social Studies, History, and Civic Education help us understand our environment, government, and culture. These are valuable and should stay in the curriculum.
But then again, not every subject we’re forced to learn has real-life value. There are some courses, especially at the university level, that feel completely unrelated to a student’s chosen career. For instance, I’ve seen students studying Engineering being forced to take courses like Philosophy or Agriculture, and those in the arts struggling through science-related courses that they may never use again. It feels like a waste of time and energy. Instead of packing the curriculum with so many subjects, why not focus on the ones that truly matter?
Another thing is how heavily theory-based the system is. In many schools, we’re made to cram notes and write long exams just to pass. But after exams, most students forget everything. That’s not real learning. We need more practical and hands-on courses. Skills like critical thinking, digital literacy, entrepreneurship, personal finance, and mental health awareness should be part of our education. These are things young people actually need as they step out into the world.
Also, at the basic education level, I believe the focus should be on creativity and personal development. Children should not be burdened with too many subjects at an early age. Instead, they should learn through storytelling, art, play, and simple lessons that build curiosity and joy for learning.
The truth is, education should be more about preparing students for life, not just passing exams. The job market is changing fast, and our school system needs to keep up. That means updating the curriculum regularly, removing outdated or irrelevant subjects, and merging similar ones to save time and energy.
In conclusion, not all school courses are necessary. Some of them are just there because that’s how things have been done for years. But it’s time to review what we teach and focus on what students truly need. If we want to raise confident, skilled, and prepared young people, then our education system must evolve with the times.
