Good morning Everyone
Hope we're doing great?
It's my pleasure writing on this platform again.
So I will be talking about the no cane policy in our school today. Back then in our schools, most of us experienced the pains accompanied with being caned in school. It was not a nice experience and it had some negative psychological effects on students.
I was lucky that during my nursery, primary and high school I was not a victim of being caned in school. But I witnessed how alot of children were victimized through beating in school and I used to think that if I had the morale I would walk up to the teachers to stop them from beating the students the way they did.
Caning a child can be one of the ways of discipline and to maintain order and respect in schools. But I think there are other ways to discipline a child in school rather than using a cane on a child. Most children that were caned in school lived in fear and anxiety which led to a stressful learning environment. This fear may inhibit their ability to concentrate and engage in learning activities.
My Junior brother was a victim of being caned in school and he was affected psychologically. As a teacher, using a cane to correct a child while teaching is not too good. This can damage a student's self-esteem and self-confidence and also lead them to believe they are not capable or worthy, and this inturn will affect their academic performance and social interactions. My brother since he was not smart enough in school his teacher took as a point of duty to be canning him each time he got things wrong. Till one day he woke up at that tender age and told my parents he was not going to school again. No matter what he does the teacher still fails him that he will not go to school again instead he will do something else. My parents tried all they could to make sure they persuade him to go to school but the harm was already done. Students who are like that need patience and love to teach them properly and not caning them. The more you use a cane on the child the more psychological trauma you are causing to the student's overall well-being and mental health. My brother grew up never to see a reason for going to school because of the negative psychological effect of canning him.
In Today's world where most schools run on the no cane policy, do you think it's a good move or we should bring back canes into our schools?
Personally i appreciate the fact that canes are no longer used in schools because some teachers misused that and dealt seriously with peoples children all in the name of discipline. The No cane policy has helped promote a safe and supportive learning environment, reduced the risk of physical harm and emotional trauma on students and it has also encouraged other alternative discipline methods like counselling and positive reinforcement. The No cane policy aligns with human rights and child protection principles.
So canes should not be brought back into our schools anymore instead teachers should devise alternative methods to discipline the students rather than canning.
