There’s a popular saying that is common amongst we students that goes, “In everything you do, eat first.” And honestly, that line speaks directly to me. I don’t know about other people, but once hunger starts dealing with me, nothing else makes sense. I become uncomfortable, irritated, and most times, completely withdrawn. It’s like my entire mood depends on whether or not I’ve eaten. And if I’m broke on top of that? Ah, just avoid me because I’m not myself at that moment.
A perfect example happened just a few days ago when I was in school. It was a Sunday morning, and I went to church like I normally do. The service started early and ended around 12 noon. The only issue was that I hadn’t eaten anything that morning. In fact, I hadn’t had a single thing since the previous evening. As the service went on, my mind kept drifting—not to the sermon, but to food. I was picturing spaghetti, egg, and a piece of chicken. My stomach was already making small noises, but I was trying to pretend that everything was okay.
When church finally ended, I should’ve gone to get food, but unfortunately, I didn’t have enough money on me to buy the kind of food I was craving. I didn’t want to just buy anything for the sake of eating, so I decided to return to my hostel. On getting there, I called my mum to explain the situation. She said she had also just gotten back from church and would send me something shortly. At that point, I couldn’t do anything else but lie down and try to sleep.
That nap wasn’t even comfortable. My body was weak, and I could feel my hunger getting worse, but I just had to wait. Eventually, I woke up and checked my phone—and boom! I saw the alert. I can’t lie, I was so excited that I didn’t even call my mum immediately to say thank you. My first instinct was to jump up, get dressed, and rush out to go and buy food. I went straight to one of my favourite food vendors and bought spaghetti, egg, and chicken—my ultimate combo anytime I’m in school.
After eating, I felt completely renewed. My energy came back instantly. I was no longer moody or weak. In fact, not long after that, I called a few of my friends so we could go and play football. That’s how good food affects me. It doesn’t just fill my stomach—it brings me back to life. It changes my mood completely and gives me the strength to go about my day with happiness. So yeah, whenever I’m down, just know it’s either i am hungry or i don't have enough money on me. But once I have eaten, I’m back to myself again.
