I still remember a day in my secondary school, I raised up my hand to ask my class teacher a certain question, it may sound stupid, but maybe because I was never a fan of math or any subject that requires calculations. So, I asked her, “Ma, please what exactly is the use of finding X if X is already there? The whole class burst into laughter, it does sound funny, but deep down, I was really confused.
All the way from nursery school, to primary to secondary, then to higher institutions. Looking back now, I couldn't even count how many notes, tests and exams I have written. Nevertheless, I am a proud graduate who can plant, harvest, apply fertilizers and more, but still I google search certain things.
Our educational system to me is too stuffed, yet it still lacks certain important things. From nursery school we were taught rhymes, going on we were taught state and capital, we learnt the names of rivers and oceans, we memorized the shape of amoeba, we were taught to draw a skeleton and label it, we learnt to plant, to rear chicks, to raise pigs and a lot, but nobody told us what to do if we are feeling depressed, nobody taught us how to manage stress and all.
Don't get me wrong, I love and believe in education, I just felt like it needed some trimming. Because, why are we still offering agricultural science in a government/private school that has no farm with no farm, why are we still studying agricultural technology/engineering in an institution that has no practical teacher talk less of teaching materials, instruments, machines and equipments. Some subjects should be merged together so as to give room for something good and useful, subjects like social studies and civic education... can't they be merged together?
Teaching/learning should be made simple, yet useful. Life skills, emotional intelligence, financial literacy, and such are what should be part of the curriculum, the world has evolved, there should be a subject by now in our curriculum that deals mainly with AI, but where are we, we still kept on repeating the same subjects year in, year out. I am not against those subjects, but new courses should be introduced, merge some together, allow a child to pick interest in a new thing.
Education is definitely a good and beautiful thing, but we all know how it is here. What do we want? Give us what we truly, give us something that will help us survive and thrive, not just something to read and pass exams. At the end, nobody will ask you to go out and find X in real life, but they will expect you to go out and find a job, they will expect you to ne able to stand on your own, they will expect you to go out and bring something in, they will expect you to pay bills, and at the same time manage to stay sane in a country like mine (Nigeria.)
