Growing up, I used to think my parents were just being too strict, especially my mum. There were moments I honestly believed she didn’t want me to enjoy my life like other kids. But now, as I reflect on those memories, I smile and thank God for the kind of training I received. What I once saw as punishment has become the reason I’m standing strong today. Funny how time opens your eyes to things you once misunderstood. I now realize that those so-called “punishments” were love in disguise and today, I’m proud of who I’ve become because of them.
One thing my parents never joked with was my movement at night. My mum always warned me never to be found roaming around at night, and no matter where I went during the day, I must make sure I got home before nightfall. At the time, it sounded like a rule meant to cage me. I would see my friends going for night strolls or evening plays, and I’d feel bad because I couldn’t join them. I used to feel like I was missing out.
But now, I understand. She was protecting me from dangers I couldn’t see as a child. She didn’t want me to fall into bad company or walk into trouble unknowingly. That constant reminder to come home early has stuck with me even as an adult. Today, I don’t like staying out late, not because I’m afraid, but because I value peace and safety a value my mum planted in me long ago.
Another memory that stands out was how my parents handled my covetous nature. As a child, I always wanted what others had. If I saw someone with a toy, a dress, or even food, I’d want the same, not because I needed it, but simply because I didn’t want to feel left out. My parents noticed this early and began to correct me.
They told me, “Covetousness is a spirit, and if you allow it to grow with you, it will ruin your peace.” Honestly, it wasn’t easy to overcome it. That character had already started building a house in my heart, and fighting it felt like fighting myself. But through constant correction, discipline, and a lot of self-reflection, I slowly overcame it. Now, I’m content with whatever I have. I’ve learned to appreciate what is mine and not envy others and that alone brings me peace of mind.
Looking back now, I see how those little corrections shaped my mindset. I’m not perfect, but I’ve come a long way. The values my parents planted in me have helped me make wise decisions, stay out of trouble, and live a peaceful life.
To any young person reading this who thinks their parents are being too harsh just wait. Time will show you that sometimes, love looks like discipline. And to my parents, I may not say it often, but I’m truly grateful. Your training has made all the difference in my life.
