My name is Sekyi Robert, a Ghanaian, born and raised in the Central Region of Ghana, one of the farming zones precisely. Gabriel Kobena Sekyi ( Late ) was my father who was a branch marketing manager of Ghana National Trading Company (GNTC ) and a farmer.
Farming was his second work, so weekends, holidays and vacations are days we work on the farm. My dad had cash crops - ( coconut, sugarcane, palm plantation ) and used to cultivate food crops like maize and cassava, not forgetting vegetables such as tomatoes and pepper.
My dad had markets women and men who were his customers, directly come to the farm to buy and harvest and transport the products to Accra for the market.
I developed a passion for farming through my dad so I studied agriculture when I went to college. My dad passed on after completion of my college. Life became new and hard for me because the family elder ( Abusuapanyin ) who gave portions of land to my dad for farming also died and there was no land agreement between the family elder and my dad. Hence family members sold out the land for settlement.
A small portion of the land was left for us, though it wasn't a permanent so every planting season we do plant either maize or cassava and when it matures, the yields are harvested and shared between the land owners and my mum.
Life became tough as a young man, I tried hard in teaching and later got into business, selling, I didn't get financial support so I quit the business though I love selling.
I decided to go driving, but you see it is hard to avoid something that you love to do, farming was my passion so after a year in driving I realised adding farming to my work would help a lot.
My interest was in subsistence farming so as a beginner I started backyard farming and I would be sharing a lot with the Hiveghana community as a backyard farmer.
I am very happy to be part of this community and I say a big thank to the leaders @Hiveghana especially @peleboss and @macsamm.
