A few days back, I was having a conversation with my cousin's brother. He completed his college as an Electrical and Electronics Engineering and recently joined a company that works on chips and microcontrollers. He was recruited for his coding skills and he basically did a small project in python and that was one of the biggest reasons why he was recruited. His intention is to staying close to embedded systems and he was also eagerly waiting to grab an opportunity that would give him exposure to that.
Not bad that his current job also helps him grow in that area of expertise and also provides him the opportunity to develop as well as test some of the products. We were having a conversation about how easy it is to grab jobs as a fresher. In most of the companies or job offers that he got, the requirement was to be a developer for the web. In spite of them studying Electrical and Electronics or Electronics and communication, most of the jobs are for web development. He said that for any fresher job related to web designing is an easy go.
I have also personally experienced this where some students of 10th grade are getting enough exposure these days to do website development at a very young age. As they are getting good exposure to Python as well, they develop backend systems either as a real-time use case or for their pet projects. In one of the schools, that I'm in touch with, the students learned web development and they did a small project for their school's library management system. Of course, they did not do it alone but they did it with the help of a few experts. But whatever be the case, this is really amazing, isn't it?
Today students who study Engineering and come out of their college start their careers as web developers easily. There is also enough need for website designing, especially for freshers. If that is not the case, they start doing some freelance website designing projects and create a portfolio which in turn helps them sell themselves to companies to recruit them.
I also personally feel that web designing is definitely a good start because understanding how a website is built, gives them enough exposure to break down each and every aspect of a website and try to replicate that easily. At least in web designing, there are enough things that are available to see and understand how it looks but for a backend project, someone should first explain the logic and in order to know if that logic works, a considerable amount of coding skills is necessary. But when it comes to website development the learning process is faster comparatively because the freshers see things with their eyes, understand them, and build something on their own or enhance it.
