I have enjoyed becoming a father even if it’s the most challenging thing I’ve ever had to do.
One of the hardest things about being a parent is so much is out of your control. I like to identify problems and fix them. Usually, if I find a problem I can’t easily fix, I take it on as a personal challenge to fix it!
But babies don’t work that way. You can’t fix them because they aren’t broken. They just exist and are doing their best.
Which leads me to the latest event in my unpredictable journey of being a father. Unfortunately, my baby boy got sick from a stomach virus. He was still being his happy self so my wife and I assumed it was somthing that would just pass. But as the hours went by, we realized it could be serious.
We did our best to keep him eating and hydrated but he wasn’t having it. At a certain point he started refusing food, water, and milk. It wasn’t too long after this we decided to go to the emergency room.
The trip to the hospital was about 20 minutes away and once we got there we had to wait our turn to see a doctor. The wait wasn’t too long and once we saw a doctor they took his vitals and agreed we came at the right time. They put him on an IV with fluids and he quickly started to look a lot better.
It’s time like these I have to remember I have a blessed life and I need to be thankful. The room was perfect, the nursing staff was amazing, and the food was terrible.
Even though the food was terrible, these were some of the best meals I’ve ever had. There is something about having a full stomach while you know your son is safe. At one point we were in the absolute scary unknown but now we were safe. It wasn’t home but it felt close to it.
There was not a separate bed so my wife and I slept on the couch in his room. My back hurts as sleeping on a couch is not ideal for someone my size, but if that’s the least of our problems, that's a win!
My son mostly slept while at the Hospital. We were there for a number of days so I even had some time to come home to clean which was a huge help for my wife. She was busy taking care of him so I wanted to do something to contribute too, cleaning the house was the the least I could do. Keep in mind, he had a stomach virus so cleaning up the house before he and my wife came back home was a priorty. We wanted to get everything that was contaminted thrown away before they came back home.
After a couple of days in the hospital we finally got discharged. My son is still not 100% but he is doing much better.
We came home and my parents met us at our house for some pizza. We had some tasty pizza, gave the baby some milk, and then went to bed.
All in all, it was an uneventful stay at this hospital. I call that a win!
Being a father is challenging; it is the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do. That being said, being a father has been the best experience of my life. It’s made me a better person and I can’t wait for our family to have more babies!
Cheers!
