"I need this to clean my dishes, I need this to wash my clothes, I need this to smell different, I need this to make my skin look younger, I need this to save my time, I need easy fixes, I need things in plastic cans, I need chemicals in bottles, I need to fight the germs, I need the newest scientific methods, I need everything to be sparkly clean, dust and stain free, I need new things and brands, I need a bigger house, I need need need more more MORE!"

More is more, right?
I should have done piles. Piles of everything instead of stuff just flying around. It's a good thing this was just for me and not an actual Hemmetti magazine cover. Because this would have not been the best that I can do. But I guess I was already bored with the topic that I invented and just wanted to get rid of this last collage piece. I should have let is stew a while. Or perhaps this would have been a great stop motion animation. Well, we never know now.
A collage made from Hjemmet magazine that I used first time in Inktober 2021.
I never threw away the magazines although I did not use them last year because I had a plan. A plan that has been brewing this long. Waiting for a right time. For those who don't understand Finnish or Norwegian here's a little explanation.
The magazine is called Hjemmet which means home. To a Finn the logic what it actually looks and sounds like is pretty simple. Just don't pronounce the j and add one of the really typical Finnish language characters to the end; double consonant and the word ending vowel. Hemmetti. That's an actual Finnish word. And it means damn, dammit and darn.
So I'm doing a series of collages that are the cover images of a fictional magazine called Hemmetti. Darn. There are so many things in life that deserve a special darn mention.
Do I need to rant about the actual subject? Need. The necessity to have more and more stuff. I feel like I should but I'm not at all in a ranting mood. So if I try to force myself into ranting it's just be ridiculous ramble. (As if I or the things I normally say aren't ridiculous anyway.)
I think I can just state the obvious.
Chemicals are everything. Our need to control things has reached it's peak. We are taught that all bacteria is bad, it needs to be killed. Clothes are washed before they are even dirty and everything has a scent and everything is eventually poured in to the earth. And the oh so practical plastic bottles often go there too. Piles of garbage in to the soil.
It does no harm there. The soil, the lakes and the sees can handle it they say. And so they keep repeating. Brands and companies, if confronted, admit that perhaps it does do some harm but it's not that big of a thing. And if it happens to be a tiny bit of an issue, the chemicals are dealt properly. They assure you.
But despite all the promises, all the knowledge, chemicals are still poured in to the nature without purifying it first. New chemical cocktails are invented and advertised and old natural ways are forgotten and claimed to be insufficient or nothing but hooey. Microplastics in beauty products, fragrances in everything and toxins that do no harm to other organisms than the ones that it is meant to kill, until it's discovered that it actually does. Kill. Everything. And that it accumulates.
Furthermore the world is full of stuff we invented and built. Shit we yet do not know we need, shit we no longer need and shit we didn't need to begin with. And I think most people agree with me that we do have a problem. The earth can't handle it. Consuming more and more drains the natural resources and the products that are made eventually, sooner or later end up in garbage piles. The oceans are filled with plastic, the earth, the plants, the animals and us humans are filled with microplastics. The water we drink has plastics in it. Bottled and tap water. And the things we need are coated with chemicals. Some with forever chemicals.
Mountains of used clothes. Fashion that no longer is fashion.
But we need more clothes to replace the winter/spring/summer/fall collection.
Huge piles of old electronics.
But we need new gadgets because the old ones are outdated and too slow.
Bigger, faster, newer. More, more, more.
The economy needs.
The society needs.
We need.
Oh I don't know.
Perhaps this became a rant. After a slow start. Or it started as a slow rant, continued as a slow rant and ended like a slow rant.
A slront.
