I woke up, did a little exercise before going to the kitchen, wondering what I would prepare for breakfast. I heard a knock on my door. I was a bit surprised seeing as I wasn't expecting anyone, especially that early.
I checked my door's peephole as the second knock came. I immediately opened the door to reveal my friend, Adeola.
“Hi babe, Good Morning” I greeted, looking very surprised to see her.
“Aunty, shift let me pass”, she said, gently pushing me out of the way.
I rolled my eyes, knowing she is about to start her drama as usual.
“Did you dream of me? this one you are here this early morning”, I asked her, still standing by the doorway, folding my arms.
“Dream of who?”, she hissed. I came closer and sat on the chair opposite her, staring at her as I wondered what prompted her early morning visit.
“Madam, go and take your bath, we are going to my place”, she announced. I squeezed my brows in confusion, wondering if there's a meeting I might have forgotten.
Seeing my confusion, she explained to me that she purposely came to drag me to her place so we could spend the day together as I have been promising to visit her for a while without doing so.
She was right. Ever since she moved down to my area about two months ago, I have only been able to visit her not more than three times due to my busy schedule at work. I have actually decided to visit her before I resumed work but she decided to surprise me by coming to bulldoze me out of my house.
“Are you going to go into the bathroom or do I have to drag you there myself?”, She asked, holding one of my arms as a sign she would make good on her words.
“Okay, okay, I will go”, I said, laughing out loud. An outsider might assume she was being rude but she is anything but that. She is one of my very good friends. Her selfless attitude was what drew us closer in the first place.
I got ready in no time and we went to her place.
“Madam, I’m here now, so what's up?” I asked, lying down on her bed.
“Nothing, I just want you to spend the day at my place”, she said, going into the kitchen.
I joined her as we prepared food and ate. The electricity came on and we watched some movies and talked about random things.
The electricity went off, so we decided to play some board games. We did that for some time before she suggested we go for a walk around her area.
We walked around, gisting and laughing until we started hearing some music sounds around the junction. Out of curiosity, we decided to check out what was going on.
We got to the junction and saw a large crowd. Some dancers were also on a platform showcasing their dancing skills.
It dawned on us that it's a campaign program. It's not uncommon to see some companies using dance as a means of advertising and promoting their products.
We heard the MC calling on some people to also come on the platform to dance as some group just finished dancing. My friend Adeola, took my hands and raised it up. I yanked my hands off hers and shook my head, telling her I didn't want to go up.
The MC saw me and called. He pointed at me to join in. Seeing my hesitation, he told people around to clap for me. I had no choice but to join them. I wasn't afraid or shy to dance but I haven't done something like that before. I am not a professional dancer but I can hold my own when it comes to dancing. We were four girls on the platform.
“Go Rukkie”, Adeola screamed amidst the crowd as the first song came up. They started off with slow music to get us prepped up before mixing it up with some hit music.
I started showing off my dance skills, twerking my waist and rolling my hips. The other girls were also doing their thing as the crowd cheered with shouting and clapping. The music stopped and the MC asked the crowd to choose which two of us would go to the final stage.
I and one of the girls were chosen for the final showdown. The music came on again and this girl and I were giving the crowd a show. She was turning and twerking while I was twisting and rolling. I almost thought I was going to lose to this girl until my favorite song back then “Shaku Shaku” came on. That was when I almost scattered the platform with my dance step. I knew without a doubt that my legwork game was on fire and I used it to my advantage.
I danced to the point that the crowd started chanting my name. “Go Rukkie, Go Rukkie……”.
There was no doubt in anyone's heart as the MC asked who the winner was after the dance. The whole crowd shouted “Rukkie” and I was presented with a selfie stick.
I was very happy with the prize as I have always wanted to get one for myself. My friend was so happy for me as she quickly jumped on me, hugging me so close despite my sweaty body.
I got back home that day and reminisced about the events of the day. It is true that sometimes things happen for a reason. If Adeola hadn't insisted I go out, I wouldn't be holding this beautiful package now.
“What an Unbelievable Day”.
