This was an amazing week and finally... FINALLY, I've got my first ever commission. It's nothing major and just a few discord/twitch emotes but still, I feel blessed and fulfilled.
As much as I want to share more about that, I'd have to resist myself as my client want this to be a surprise for their own community so I'll just be in the sidelines. Maybe I can share more in the future or maybe not? Who knows?
With this amazing news, I feel inspired and thought that this was a good time to start doing these. I've been doing chibis before but there's no concept or anything. So, maybe now, I'll be doing more of these more properly.
Drawing Process
Lineart and Layering
For this week's art, I took some inspiration from Ice Pixie. This time, I did something different this time after I learned from my last week's mistake with last week's post, Olivia of the Brook. I did the main character, wings and sparkle all seperately and as you can see above, the lineart got jumbled and overlapped.
So this time, to fix that, I added some very basic colors after the initial lineart. I learned about this idea after watching some random videos in youtube on how they do animations. This makes it easier to understand the layering and allow me to see the images without the linearts overlapping.
Base Color
I used the original Ice Pixie art from Splinterlands as my guide for the colors. I filled them up one by one based on the feel I am looking for. I also realized that I need to add some of my own touches in order to make this more of my style instead of relying completely with the original art's color scheme so I did that as well. As you can see, the belt and the skin may not be that similar to the original art but it's also not so far to still have the feel of the original Ice Pixie.
Adding Details
In this part, I added the shadows as usual but also added a few more. I changed the lineart color for the wings and the sparkle in order for the main body to pop out and I think it worked out great! I also added the glare on the glasses and while it's not so obvious, I also added some highlight on the hair.
Adding Animations
I'm feeling a bit pumped this week so I added animations on this one as well. I made the sparkle looks like it's shining by manipulating the size and keyframes.
For the wings, I'm happy that I made the thing separately so I can just duplicate it and then crop the duplicated wings into left and right wing. That way, I can manipulate each of them easier. Similar to the sparkle, I manipulated the size and keyframes to create the flapping effect. When doing this though, you need to correct each new frame added because some part of the wings (the lower part that was out of the frame initially) will either have no lineart or color. So, as you animated it by creating new frames, you need to look out for these inconsistencies as you go on to make your animations smooth.
Background
For the snowy background, I took some free videos from Canva to add. I can actually just not do this and skip it but I feel like the plain white background seems a bit lacking and I want to make the finished part as my cover.
