The other day when I took the e-bike up to Haytor for a good up hill test I found that I did not need to change from the centre 33 tooth ring on the crankset at all during the ride. So the other rings on the triple and the derailleur may as well go.
So a bit of 3D printing is required to make a carrier for the PAS sensor magnets but that an easy job as there are a few files on Thingiverse. The main reason as the steel 22 tooth ring will be removed the sensor ring will have nothing to grip on to.
The PAS ring fits the 3D printing a treat.
The first job on the bike is to remove the derailleur cable and selector.
Then the crankset needs to be pulled, one thing I have found is because the ISIS bottom bracket is hollow it needs an 8mm bolt placed inside for the puller to push against.
Ok that’s off so I may as well replace the chain while I’m at it and put my new waxed 9 speed e-bike chain on. One of the big benefits of waxed chains over conventional oil lubricated chains is the are a lot cleaner and don’t pick up road grime turning the whole thing into black grinding paste so everything gets dirty I bet every cyclist gas ended up with a black chainring tattoo on their leg at some time. With wax chains they don’t pick up dirt and the drive train lasts a lot longer.
Thats everything off time for a good clean and degrease. Then I can start putting things back together.
The crack set reassembled with the PAS sensor and single chain ring. One thing I forgot to account for was the thickness of the large chain ring so the bolts are a fraction too long still an easy fix with s bit more 3D printing.
Unfortunately as you can see by the sawn out section I didn’t account for the thiner section where it goes under the crank arm but I’ll fix that properly in the mk2 version. Much nicer and neater.
New waxed chain back on and a little bit shorter. All the excess wax will work it’s way off during the first ride.
So Hivers a productive mornings work and its all good to go out for another ride.
I have been using waxed chains for a few years now and If anyone wants me to do a hive post on DIY chain waxing how too just ask.
