Once upon a time, somewhere in the glossy world of fashion and modeling, every woman wanted to look like Agbani Darego: slim, tall, dark-skinned, and effortlessly elegant.
It became the gold standard.
And suddenly, our chubby sisters; soft, full, radiant, were made to feel like they didn’t belong.
Their bodies, once celebrated in their homes and cultures, became subjects of ridicule.
‘You’re too fat.’
‘You need to watch your weight.’
‘You’d be so pretty if you lost a few pounds.’
And just like that, shame crept in. Shame disguised as ‘concern.’
Depression whispered. Insecurity screamed.
Then came a plot twist-Big, Bold, and Beautiful.
The world tilted again. Now, curves were currency. The once-celebrated slim girls began to wonder:
‘Do I need to gain weight to be seen?’
‘Will anyone find me attractive if I stay this thin?’
Fattening creams. Injections. Padded hips.
The battle shifted, but the war raged on.
Curiosity, they say, kills the cat. But in this case, curiosity, the curiosity to ‘fix’ what wasn’t broken, led many women to go under the knife in search of perfection.
Brazilian Butt Lifts. Silicone Breasts. Lip Fillers.
Some came out alive, but many came out damaged; physically, emotionally, or both. And some never came out at all.
So I ask: To what end?
Why must we constantly morph ourselves into society’s latest obsession?
Your body is not a battleground.
You were never meant to fight yourself in the mirror just to win approval from people who don’t even know your story.
You are beautifully and uniquely made.
Embrace your physique, whatever shape it is.
Celebrate your complexion.
You’re Black and breathtaking.
You’re White and wonderful.
You’re tall and extraordinary.
You’re petite and powerful.
Stop looking down on yourself because of your stature or your skin tone.
Let confidence rise from within, and watch how it reshapes your world.
You are not a trend. You are timeless.
You are not ‘before’ or ‘after’. You are enough, right now.
So, dear sister:
Stand tall. Speak life. Embrace it all.
Because your body is not a battleground.
It is a masterpiece.
