Se lo pregunto en serio: ¿qué haría si encuentra un celular en la calle?, ¿cuál sería su reacción? Pues un día como este, hace cinco años, le sucedió a mis hijos.
Íbamos a comprar unos dulces para sus actividades de cierre del curso, era temprano en la mañana, y ellos caminaban delante, muy cerca de mí. El varón, que siempre recogía lo que le llamaba la atención del piso (había que regañarlo con frecuencia), descubrió el celular entre la hierba.
La hermana curiosa confirmaba el hallazgo: "¡Sí, es un celular! Qué bonito, es blanco.”
A primera vista funcionaba, estaba bien cuidado, encendía, y la pantalla no tenía rayones. Miramos alrededor por si el dueño estaba cerca, pero no pasaba nadie. El niño insistió en localizar a la persona.

Por mi mente la primera interrogante: ¿cómo le aviso si no tengo celular? Estaba decidida a solucionar el asunto cuanto antes pero, ¿de qué manera?
Guardamos el hallazgo, compramos los dulces, y le comentamos el suceso a la dueña del negocio. Tal vez había escuchado hablar sobre el tema. Su primera sugerencia fue no devolverlo, mucho menos si yo no tenía. Aquel era, al decir de la señora, un regalo de los "santos".
Su hermana escuchaba la conversación y añadió perspicaz que apagara el teléfono para que no entraran llamadas, sobre todo la del dueño, quien al parecer no se había dado cuenta de su pérdida. Salí rápido del lugar, pues llegaron a decirme -con insistencia- que podían hacerse cargo de todo.

Del otro lado una voz furiosa: "¿qué haces con eso, es mío, me lo tienes que entregar?" Fue chocante, pero yo quería darle tranquilidad. Le dije la dirección del parque más cercano para vernos y aseguró que en 15 minutos estaría ahí. Avisé a mi esposo para que me acompañara.
Cuando vi al desconocido estaba descompuesto, contrariado, pero fue amable. Pidió disculpas, le entregué el celular. Seguía cerca del lugar donde se perdió el dispositivo porque cuidaba a un familiar ingresado en un hospital muy próximo.
Bajaron las tensiones, y volvió a excusarse. Así ocurrió, un día como hoy hace cinco años.
Pocas veces he contado la historia. Unos me critican, otros añaden que pude pedir dinero a cambio. Entre mi esposo y yo ha servido sobre todo para recordar el deseo de los niños de entregar el objeto a su dueño.

I have rarely told the story. Some criticize me, others add that I may have asked for money in return. Between my husband and me, it has served mainly to remind us of the children's desire to hand over the object to its owner.
