Hace una semana me vine a la ciudad de Caracas a visitar a mi madre, a mis hermanas y sobrinos. Esta visita también la hago para ayudar a mis hermanas a cuidar a mi mamá y estar con ella, que dentro de unos meses cumplirá noventa años.
A week ago, I came to Caracas to visit my mother, sisters, and nephews. I am also visiting to take care of and be with my mother, who will turn ninety in a few months.
Mi madre es una persona que tiene lucidez mental, aun cuando se le olvidan algunas cosas y hasta hace poco continuaba tejiendo, una actividad que a ella le gustaba mucho y hacía muy bien, pero dice que ya no puede. Ella tiene buena salud, pero tiene dificultades para movilizarse y camina con ayuda de una andadera. Mis hermanas la cuidan y yo voy con frecuencia a ayudarlas.
My mother is mentally alert, even though she forgets some things, and until recently she continued to knit, an activity she enjoyed very much and was very good at, but she says she can no longer do it. She is in good health, but has difficulty moving around and walks with the aid of a walker. My sisters take care of her, and I often go to help them.
En estos días nos reunimos para merendar, jugar, ir al cine, además de que festejamos el cumpleaños de mi hermana menor.
These days we get together for snacks, games, and movies, and we also celebrate my younger sister's birthday.
Ella cumplió sesenta años y se lo celebramos en casa, con torta, quesillo y gelatina. Estuvimos conversando y riéndonos, recordando tiempos pasados.
She turned sixty, and we celebrated at home with cake, cheese, and jelly. We talked and laughed, reminiscing about the past.
Todas las tardes sin falta merendamos a las 4 y media de la tarde. Un cafecito que no puede faltar, acompañado de pancitos dulces, porqués o tortas que hace mi hermana, buñuelos o polvorosas que hago yo. Celebramos que estamos reunidas con nuestra madre y que tenemos salud y podemos disfrutar de estos sabrosos dulces.
Every afternoon without fail, we have a snack at 4:30 p.m. A cup of coffee is a must, accompanied by sweet rolls, pastries or cakes made by my sister, and fritters or powdered sugar cookies made by me. We celebrate being together with our mother, our good health, and being able to enjoy these tasty treats.
Salímos de compras a algunos lugares de la ciudad como el bulevar de Sabana grande, el paseo Los Ilustres y Santa Mónica. El día que fuimos a Sabana Grande llovió y es que esta época del año corresponde al período de lluvia y la temperatura baja un poco. La ciudad de Caracas tiene una temperatura ideal, ni calurosa, ni fría, muy diferente a la ciudad de Maracay, donde vivo, que es muy calurosa.
I went shopping in some places in the city such as Sabana Grande Boulevard, Los Ilustres Promenade, and Santa Monica. The day we went to Sabana Grande, it rained, as this time of year is the rainy season and the temperature drops a little. The city of Caracas has an ideal temperature, neither hot nor cold, very different from the city of Maracay, where I live, which is very hot.
Esa tarde la lluvia no nos detuvo y estuvimos caminando para comprar algunas cosas y nos detuvimos a comernos una barquilla.
That afternoon, the rain didn't stop us, and we went walking to buy a few things and stopped to eat a barquilla.
Regresamos en metro, aunque es gratis para los de la tercera edad, a veces no nos gusta montarnos porque generalmente la estación que tomamos para regresar a la casa, tiene mucha gente y como nos sucedió, casi nos metieron a empujones al vagón e íbamos paradas, pero por la lluvia no nos quedó más remedio y la estación donde nos bajamos nos deja a una cuadra de la casa.
We returned by subway, although it is free for seniors, sometimes we don't like to ride it because the station we take to return home is usually very crowded, and as happened to us, we were almost pushed into the car and had to stand, but because of the rain we had no choice, and the station where we got off is only a block away from home.
También en estos días fui al cine con mis dos hermanas, porque nos gusta mucho. Hay un cine que nos queda cerca, en el Centro Comercial Ipsfa. La tarifa es la mitad de precio para los de la tercera edad y lo aprovechamos viendo tres películas: Cómo entrenar a tu dragón, Lilo & Stitch y Jurasic World: el renacer. Todas muy buenas. Las disfrutamos mucho.
I also went to the movies with my two sisters recently, because we really enjoy it. There is a movie theater near us, in the Ipsfa Shopping Center. The price is half off for seniors, so we took advantage of that and saw three movies: How to Train Your Dragon, Lilo & Stitch, and Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom. They were all very good. We enjoyed them very much.
Fueron días muy agradables, mi mamá se sentía muy feliz de tener a casi todas sus hijas cerca, eso es muy importante para una madre y aún más a la edad que tiene y también lo fue para sus hijas y en especial para mí, que aunque no vivo cerca, trato de que los momentos que compartimos sean felices y frecuentes.
Those were very pleasant days. My mother was very happy to have almost all of her daughters nearby, which is very important for a mother, especially at her age. It was also important for her daughters, and especially for me, because even though I don't live nearby, I try to make sure that the moments we share are happy and frequent.
