Surely, these kind of things we should face are stressful, and if you have it in your daily basis, then welcome to the club. You are one of us.
As college students, we are not deteriorated only by backlogs or a long week of brilliant classes, but also by the worriness to every subject's exam and oral that are yet to come. For psychology students, this is a normal setup, like being a fig in a tree that sways whenever the wind crosses its branches—whatever weather we have. It is almost our fighting response to be worried or become anxious despite being a "psychology" student who should be a sage in controlling those emotional conditions. But the fact is we are also in dire need of help to calm ourselves just like the other people outside this field. And this is especially when taking exams that are in lowest possibility of passing.
So how do we handle such worriness, especially when we have no enough time ahead? One simple answer: we eat.
While waiting for the major class, everybody in our classroom is just as chaotic as our lessons. We were studying a handful of Theories of Personality that I can attest as one of the hardest subject we had. So each students are no calm nor steady, everyone is worried while some are doing an excessive laugh trying to make sense of their laziness in reviewing. Well, as someone who doesnt want to review, I cannot study in that current environment that makes everything more messy that it is. So I and my friends decided to visit a cafe and just eat something tasty than our review papers.
I have had this college friends since I started my second year, so it is a bit long time being with them. In almost all of problems and flight-and-fight situations I have for college, these are people the people I fought with, and the people I can say who helped me grew more than I expected.
Going back, we planned to visit a cafe and do our review there since it was a calm not so noisy cafe. When we got there, it was like dispeling the myth, because the grinder for the drinks is as loud as our classmates, but it came silent a little while later. We ordered pizza and an ounce of drinks. It was a big pizza that is as thick as our reviewer, but this is more fine than eating Freud's words. Kidding.
We had our conversation about anything going around like how fine the others could if we didnt go to school or why our teacher looks more hostile than she is not. It was a couple of minutes we we remembered something and it was our drinks. So everybody got up and ordered different drinks every two person. We were four so the first pair got a blue raspberry lemonade drink and the last two had their strawberry drink, although ours taste better. We continued our chitchats as if we do not have an exam later that would bury us deeply to our teacher's class record.
After fifteen minutes, we are served by the glorious pizza of StarFrappe. It was big and crunchy on the lower parts, burnt with love and passion while made. The dough was so soft to eat despite its subtle crunchiness, making it more pleasing not only to our taste buds but also to out stressed minds. While eating, we thought of watching a movie from netflix and each of us has to decide which is which. Without doubt, I expected them to be indecisive for that, as they are to other things. So I decided for them, scanned Netflix and searched for a horrov movie. We watched Evil Dead Rise which I watched before. And yes, we watched movie and didnt review for the exam. The free wifi of the cafe saves us from hanging around scattered papers and the foods told us also to stop reviewing.
We finished our dine in in the cafe with a payment to the drinks and while everybody got no lesson to review, our stomachs are full of foods that surely wont help us in the exam. We packed our things, cleaned the table so that the staff wont do it, and left the cafe with no worrines, but satisfaction and smile. When we arrived to the classroom, they were already sitting and the quiz is about to start.
Guess what? We still presented ourselves with confidence and passed the exam just like the other students. We got 46 checks out of 50 items. Not bad for students who didnt review. The secret? We already had a handful of information during those discussions and it saved us from the cliff of our teacher's pen.
Not all things that are uncertain should be faced with great worriness or anxiety, although we cannot control it, but it is in our response how to deal with it. In a condition full of anxiety-provoking things, being anxious is a normal response but never the final solution. Everybody have to help themselves and fix everything that are no calm. For us, we just have to find the right people, the good ones, and search for a place that soothes our heart.
It can only take a few people and a place to calm the human mind away from the noise. And if the noise is too loud for us, it only takes connected hearts to reach for each other.
