Do We Exist for a Purpose or Are We Just Existing?
This is a good topic that can make one not to take his or her life here on earth for granted.A very big thank you to Hive-Reachout community and Hive community at large.
I am @ekojah Joshua.Take your time and follow me as I dive into this topic.
One of the greatest questions of life is whether we exist for a purpose or we are just passing through life without meaning. As for me, I believe strongly that we were not created to merely exist. We are here for a divine reason—to represent God on earth, live intentionally, and make a difference in the lives of others.
This conviction came alive in me the day I received a deep insight from God. I came to understand that just as God is good, kind, and compassionate, we are created to reflect His nature. The Bible says in Genesis 1:27 that “God created man in His own image.” This means we are made to mirror His heart—a heart of love, giving, and service.
From that day, my life changed. I stopped chasing survival alone, and began pursuing purpose. I discovered that my true passion is reaching out to people—especially the needy, the forgotten, the broken, and the hopeless. I began to live a life of giving—offering food items,
financial help, words of encouragement, and mentorship. This passion led me and my team to places across Nigeria, including Benue State, Nasarawa State (in towns like Akwanga, Wamba, and Karu), the interior villages of Kaduna State, and parts of Niger State.
In each of these communities, we brought not just physical help, but emotional healing. We shared smiles, hope, and the love of Christ, sometimes even through small gestures like a plate of rice, a pair of second-hand clothes, or a kind word. What we gave may have seemed little, but the impact has been eternal. I can never forget the tears of joy, the prayers from grateful hearts, and the transformation that comes when people realize they are not forgotten.
In my view, purpose is twofold—there is a general purpose and a personal one. The general purpose is what we all share as human beings: to love God, serve others, and do good. Micah 6:8 reminds us: “He has shown you, O man, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly, to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.”
But beyond the general, there is a unique purpose—a personal mission that only you can fulfill. Each person has gifts, passions, and experiences that point toward this divine assignment. Mine is outreach, compassion, and generosity. Yours might be teaching, healing, building, writing, or leading. We all carry something this world needs.
To discover this personal purpose, I encourage people to:
Ask God in prayer – He made you, and He knows why.
Pay attention to what excites or burdens your heart.
Take note of what comes naturally to you—your strengths are not accidental.
Start serving – Purpose is often discovered in the place of service, not silence.
Get feedback from people around you who see your strengths clearly.
The truth is, we do not exist to simply go to school, get a job, make money, and die. Life is much more meaningful when lived on purpose. And that purpose, I believe, is to represent God—through generosity, love, kindness, and impact.
As I continue this journey of purpose with my team, I am constantly reminded of Matthew 5:16: “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven.” That’s what life is truly about—being a light in a dark world, a hand of hope to the hopeless, and a voice of love to the unheard or neglected people.
