There are times in my life when strange things happen to me and it makes wonder if those things happened by chance or is something or someone directing and guiding me? That’s how I’ve been feeling lately because of a few things that happened to me just within this past week and the week before. These things have been playing on my mind and I can't just ignore them but keep wondering if it’s all just a coincidence or maybe I was simply following my thoughts, my instincts or being led by something I can’t fully explain.
I’m not trying to sound too religious here but from what I’ve been taught and by convection, I’ve learned from teachings that sometimes God speaks to us in a way we do not expect. Maybe not through a loud voice but maybe through our thoughts or through a feeling in our heart. It could be that He wants to directs us using that quiet voice inside us. I honestly can’t say exactly how it works but these few experiences of mine made me believe even more that there’s something going on beyond what the eyes can see.
Last week, while I was at work, I was feeling very uncomfortable. My mind wasn't in school as all and all of a sudden I had a very strong feeling that I should go home. It was just around 9:30 to 10am. That was very strange because at that time, nobody is usually at home. Everyone had gone to their place of work. So in a normal situation, I shouldn’t have thought of going home. Still I listened to that feeling and took excuse from my boss that I needed to quickly get something from the house. I left work and went home.
When I got home and came down from the bike, I heard a sound from the back of the house like a door that had just been forcefully closed. I rushed to the back and saw the lock on the ground. It had been broken and the door was open. I entered the house and noticed that things had been moved around, they were not the same way we left them while leaving the house in the morning. It looked like someone had come into the house and was looking for something. I called my mum and siblings to ask if anyone had come home and they all said no. That was when I knew someone had entered the house while we were away. I may have arrived just in time and the person might have heard the sound of the bike and got scared and ran away. If I had not follow the inner voice, If I had stayed back at work, the story would have been different cause I remember 2020, something similar happen when we all went for our work in the morning and someone broke through the window and stole some things from the house.
A few days later, I was supposed to travel to Makurdi with some of my friends for a program. It was a journey of about 250km and we planned to leave early in the morning by 8am. My friends left on time but for some reason, I just kept delaying. From 8am to 10am, I was still at home. I wasn’t really doing anything serious. I just didn’t feel like leaving yet. They called to ask if I had left, and I told them I hadn’t. Then around 11am, my mind told me to live and I finally left the house and went to the road to get a vehicle.
As I stood by the road, a man driving a private car stopped and asked where I was going. He said he was going to Lafia, which is along the same route I was going. I joined him and when we reached where he was stopping, I tried to pay for the distance he covered but he said I shouldn’t worry. He pull out some money from his pocket and gave me to continue my journey and to keep the rest. Just like that, you can imagine that? I didn’t spend any money from home to where I was going.
Later, when I got to my destination, I called my friends to ask where they were. They said they were still on the road. I asked why, and they said the car they entered had a problem and broke down in the middle of nowhere. It took hours before a mechanic came and what was supposed to be a 5 hour journey became a 8 hour journey for them became what broke in their car wasn't something that could be fixed immediately.
I, who left late and didn’t even pay for transport, arrived before them and had no problem at all. Was that luck, a coincidence or what?
Something else happened just three days ago. Around 9pm, I planned to call a friend but for some reason, I kept delaying the call. Usually, when ever I want to make calls, I step out of my room to make the calls because the network is poor inside. So around few minutes pass 8pm, I finally stood up to make the call, I didn't wait till 9pm.
As I walked toward the back door of the house, I noticed the door wasn’t closed properly and right there, I saw a snake crawling into the house. I quickly took a wood and killed it. Imagine if I had delayed the call for a few more minutes or waited till the 9pm before calling. That snake would have entered the house. Maybe someone in the house would have been bitten. Who knows what could have happened?
All these things that happened made me remember something from when I was a child. My dad was a force man and he used to travel for long periods without coming home because of his work. There are a time he stayed away for almost a year. One day, I was just playing with a toy phone at home when I suddenly felt like calling my dad. So I started pretending to call him. I was both the one calling and the one answering. I said, Daddy, when are you coming home? and I replied like him saying, Don’t worry, I’m coming. Just give me 30 minutes and you’ll see me. I was just a small child playing. But the surprising part is that, within 30 minutes, my dad really showed up at the door. Nobody told me he was coming. Nobody expected his coming. That moment has stayed in my heart ever since.
Why I'm I sharing these now? These experiences may look small or unreasonable to some people but to me, they are not ordinary. I can't tell if they are just coincidence or nature playing its part or just me using my instincts or maybe something or someone is guiding my inner self. I’m not completely sure what it is. I don’t want to jump into conclusions. But I know one thing, there’s something more than just luck happening here. Which I hope to find.
