After 8 hours of travel, enjoying the wonders that the Andean paramo gives us, we arrived at the highest road point in Venezuela. At 4118 meters above sea level we find the Collado del Condor, better known as El Aguila Peak.
The Eagle peak belongs to the national park Sierra The Culata, between the town of Apartaderos and Timotes and, as I mentioned, it is the highest point of the trans-Andean road and of the whole country. When we arrived to this area, the fog completely enveloped us, the cold was felt intensely and at this point, I felt bad, I felt dizzy and with a slight headache, due to the lack of oxygen, I was worried and felt sad, I thought I was not going to enjoy this beautiful place, but fortunately, my brother, had a couple of candies, which helped me to recover my energy and after sitting a while and acclimatize to the place I could walk around the condor's pass. Walking slowly and trying not to talk too much. This being one of the recommendations that tour guides always give, because the altitude and the change of climate, can impact on the health of some people.
Después de 8 horas de viaje, disfrutando de las maravillas que nos regala el páramo andino, llegamos al punto vial más alto de Venezuela. A 4118 msnm nos encontramos al Collado del Cóndor, mejor conocido como el pico el águila.
El Pico el Águila pertenece al parque nacional Sierra La Culata, entre el pueblo de Apartaderos y Timotes y, como mencioné, es el punto más alto de la carretera trasandina y de todo el país. Al llegar a esta zona, la neblina nos arropó completamente, el frío se sentía intensamente y en este punto, me sentí mal, me sentí mareada y con un leve dolor de cabeza, debido a la falta de oxígeno, me preocupé y me sentí triste, pensé que no iba a disfrutar de este bello lugar, pero afortunadamente, mi hermano, tenía un par de caramelos, que me ayudaron a recuperar la energía y después de sentarme un rato y aclimatarme al lugar pude recorrer el collado del cóndor. Caminando despacio y tratando de no hablar demasiado. Siendo esta una de las recomendaciones que siempre dan los guías turísticos, porque la altitud y el cambio de clima, pueden impactar en la salud de algunas personas.
The trans-Andean road looks amazing from here and, as we can see, it is a very steep road, being a mountainous area, with consecutive curves. The ascent up to the col of the condor is impressive, you can't help but look out the window and admire the beautiful scenery surrounding the Sierra La Culata national park on one side and the Sierra la Nevada national park on the other.
In this place we found a handicraft market, restaurants and sales of gastronomic and handicraft products. But I also found some structures that caught my attention from the architectural point of view, which also have a great historical, religious and cultural value.
La carretera trasandina se ve increíble desde aquí y, como podemos ver, es una carretera de gran pendiente, por ser una zona montañosa, con curvas consecutivas. El ascenso hasta el collado del cóndor es impresionante, no puedes dejar de mirar por la ventanilla y admirar el hermoso paisaje que rodea el parque nacional Sierra La Culata de un lado y el parque nacional Sierra la Nevada del otro.
En este lugar encontramos un mercado artesanal, restaurantes y ventas de productos gastronómicos y artesanales. Pero además encontré algunas estructuras que me llamaron mucho la atención desde el punto de vista arquitectónico, que además tienen un gran valor histórico, religioso y cultural.

On a tall pedestal in the shape of a truncated pyramid, with several parallel horizontal grooves, we find the bronze sculpture of an Andean condor (one of the largest birds that exist and is unfortunately in danger of extinction), holding the portrait of the liberator, adorned with beautiful laurels.
The sculpture is really beautiful. In the photograph, it is not appreciated, as I would like, but the fog, it was very thick at the time. But, without a doubt, it is a unique and admirable monument.

The Virgin of Coromoto Chapel.

If we look up from the monument, the condor, on top of a rocky mountain, we can see the dome of a beautiful chapel. I could not miss it, and together with my brother and niece, we walked there. Where you also get a breathtaking view of these imposing mountains of the paramo.
The Virgin of Coromoto Chapel, pays homage to the patron saint of Venezuela, and in the plaque that we found on its facade, we can learn that it was built by the people in 1955 as a tribute to Archbishop José Humberto Quintero, as a reminder of his episcopal consecration.
Si alzamos la vista desde el monumento, el cóndor, en la cima de una montaña rocosa, podemos ver la cúpula de una hermosa capilla. No podía dejar de visitarla, y junto a mi hermano y mi sobrina, caminamos hasta ahí. Donde además se obtienen unas vistas impresionantes de estas imponentes montañas del páramo.
La Capilla Virgen de Coromoto, rinde homenaje a la patrona de Venezuela, y en la placa que encontramos en su fachada, podemos conocer que fue construida por el pueblo el 1955 como un homenaje al Arzobispo José Humberto Quintero, como un recuerdo a su consagración episcopal.
It is a chapel, simple and small, with a single nave, but with a beautiful facade, which reminds me of the Gothic style, for its beautiful main arch framed by two columns, culminating in the form of a peak with a cross and on each side a small tower similar to that of a castle. The roof is tile, gabled, with a good slope.
In each lateral facade, we find four small windows in the form of pointed arch and in the back, we see that it excels a circular area where the altar of the virgin is embedded.
The interior is rustic and simple. We observe the image of the Virgin of Coromoto and Dr. José Gregorio Hernández.
The chapel is in good condition, but the humidity of the place has taken its toll, requiring maintenance, so that it remains standing for many years.
Es una capilla, sencilla y pequeña, de una sola nave, pero con una fachada preciosa, que me recuerda al estilo gótico, por su hermoso arco principal enmarcado por dos columnas, culmina en forma de pico con una cruz y de cada lado una pequeña torre similar a la de un castillo. El techo es de teja, a dos aguas, con una buena pendiente.
En cada fachada lateral, encontramos cuatro pequeñas ventanas en forma de arco puntiagudo y en la parte posterior, vemos que sobresale un área circular donde está empotrado el altar de la virgen.
El interior es rústico y sencillo. Observamos la imagen de la Virgen de Coromoto y del Dr. José Gregorio Hernández.
La capilla se encuentra en buen estado, pero la humedad del lugar ha hecho de las suyas, requiriendo mantenimiento, para que se mantenga de pie por muchos años.

From the chapel, I had a superior view of the handicraft market. It really caught my attention because of its decagon-shaped floor plan. This modern bohio-shaped market looked beautiful, its circular tile roof looks great in the natural setting.
Desde la capilla, tuve una vista superior del mercado artesanal. Me llamó mucho la atención por su planta en forma de decágono. Este mercado en forma de bohío moderno se veía hermoso, su techo circular en teja se ve estupendo en el entorno natural.
The walls are brick with a window on each side of the decagon. Going downstairs, I went inside, because I was very curious to see this beautiful roof from the inside and I thought it looked amazing.
All the beams are joined at one point, where the cane is intertwined, giving it shape and completely covering the whole area, it looks like a fabric, and I really like this type of sustainable and natural construction. The dome of the roof has some openings, where the light passes through, illuminating the whole place.
The roof is supported by wooden beams and columns, of good thickness and quality. There are no walls, so no space is wasted, allowing more artisans to come and exhibit their beautiful garments.
This day was Sunday and it was already late, some had already left, however, we were able to admire some beautiful garments, made with precious stones, my favorite amethysts, leather garments and much more. No doubt, you want to take a nice souvenir from here.
Las paredes son de ladrillos con una ventana en cada cara del decágono. Al bajar, entre, porque tenía mucha curiosidad de ver este hermoso techo desde el interior y me pareció increíble.
Todas las vigas se unen en un punto, donde se entrelaza la caña brava, dándole forma y cubriendo por completo todo el area, parece un tejido, y me gusta mucho este tipo de construcción sostenible y natural. La cúpula del techo tiene unas aberturas, donde transpasa la luz, iluminando todo el lugar.
El techo es soportado por vigas y columnas en madera, de buen espesor y calidad. No existen paredes, por lo que no se desperdicia espacio, dando lugar a que mas artesanos puedan venir y exhibir sus bellas prendas.

The Eagle's Peak or Condor's Hill is a magnificent place to enjoy the imposing nature, the rich climate of the paramo, a very special architecture and friendly and charming people. El pico águila o el collado del cóndor, es un lugar magnífico para disfrutar de la imponente naturaleza, el rico clima del páramo, una arquitectura muy especial y gente amable y encantadora.
