One of the things that characterizes Mérida (Venezuela), is the love for handicrafts in its different expressions, my favorite, is the carving in wood. I remember that when I was a child, I loved to admire all those wooden toys that we usually find in the different craft markets located generally in tourist sites inside and outside the city.
Yesterday, I had the opportunity to remember this and to admire beautiful carved sculptures in wood, in this small market that I will take you to know today. It is the Antonio Rojas Guillén Artisan Market, located in front of the Plaza las Heroínas, a few meters from the Mérida Teleférico. Yes, I'm honest, I had completely forgotten this place, I hadn't visited it in a long time, so entering again felt like it was the first time.
Una de las cosas que caracterizan a Mérida (Venezuela), es el amor por la artesanía en sus distintas expresiones, mi favorita, es el tallado en madera. Recuerdo que cuando era niña, me encantaba admirar todos esos juguetes de madera que solemos encontrar en los distintos mercados de artesanía ubicados generalmente en sitios turísticos dentro y fuera de la ciudad.
El día de ayer, tuve la oportunidad de recordar esto y de admirar hermosas escultoras talladas en madera, en este pequeño mercado al que te llevaré a conocer el día de hoy. Se trata del Mercado Artesanal Antonio Rojas Guillén, ubicado al Frente de la Plaza las Heroínas, a muy pocos metros del Teleférico de Mérida. Si, les soy sincera, había olvidado por completo este sitio, hace mucho no lo visitaba, así que entrar de nuevo se sintió como si fuese la primera vez.
A rainy afternoon
The first thing we find is a beautiful rustic wooden gate with a Creole tile roof, which combines very well with the architectural environment of this area.
Lo primero que encontramos es un hermoso portón en madera rústica con techo de teja criolla, que combina muy bien con el entorno arquitectónico de esta zona.
Next, we have the original facade with an elevated metal sign that says Mercado Artesanal, which also culminates with a tile louver.
Seguidamente, tenemos la fachada original con un Letrero metálico elevado que dice Mercado Artesanal, que también culmina con una lumbrera de teja.
As you can see, the facade is very simple, made up of three parts, a central open space that welcomes visitors and two series of one-sided rooms, which gives the facade its triangular and peaked shape.
Como ven, la fachada es muy sencilla, formada por tres partes, un espacio abierto central que recibe a los visitantes y dos series de locales a una sola agua, que le da esa forma triangular y de pico a la fachada.
One of the things that I loved is that when you enter you find a small square full of color, because on the metal straps they placed a kind of colored canvases, which protect the site from the sun, but at the same time let the light pass through.
Una de las cosas que me encanto, es que al entrar te encuentras con una pequeña plaza llena de color, ya que sobre las correas metálicas colocaron una especie de lonas de colores, que protegen el sitio del sol, pero al mismo tiempo deja pasar la luz.
In its central courtyard, we find a beautiful sculpture in honor of the independence hero, Francisco de Miranda, this sculpture caught my attention, because it is quite realistic, with details in the face quite noticeable. This bust rests on a rectangular brick pedestal and on it there are different bronze plaques that tell us about its history. This sculpture was inaugurated on October 12, 1985, on the occasion of the celebration of the fifth centenary of the discovery of America.
En su patio central, encontramos una escultura hermosa, en Honor al Prócer de la independencia, Francisco de Miranda, esta escultura me llamó mucho la atención, porque es bastante realista, con detalles en el rostro bastante apreciable. Este busto reposa sobre un pedestal rectangular de ladrillo y en él se encuentran distintas placas en bronce que nos cuenta de su historia. Esta escultura se inauguró el 12 de octubre de 1985, con motivo de la celebración del quinto centenario del descubrimiento de América.
In the central patio, there are also three concrete and brick benches. From where visitors can enjoy the handicrafts or taste some Andean dessert. Around the courtyard, we find a gallery of parabolic arches, surrounded by vegetation that give a harmonious view of the market.
En el patio central, también encontramos tres bancos de concreto y ladrillo. Desde donde los visitantes pueden disfrutar de las artesanías o degustar algún postre andino. Alrededor del patio, encontramos una galería de arcos parabólicos, rodeados de vegetación que le dan una visión armónica al mercado.
Among the colors that stand out are terracotta and brick, thanks to its caico floors, the coating with this material in some of its walls and the use of tile.
Entre los colores que destacan, esta el terracota y el ladrillo, gracias a sus pisos de caico, el revestimiento con este material en algunas de sus paredes y el uso de la teja.
Something that caught my attention is that the roof covering is formed by naked tiles, that is to say, I am used to this type of roof having three layers: The roof, generally in tongue and groove wood, the waterproofing layer known as asphalt mantle and the tile covering. In this case, only the tile can be seen, meticulously placed to prevent the rain and the sun's rays from passing through.
Algo que me llamo mucho la atención es que la cubierta de techo, esta formada por teja al desnudo, es decir, estoy acostumbrada a que este tipo de techo, tengan tres capas: La cubierta, generalmente en madera machihembrada, la capa impermeabilizante conocida como manto asfáltico y el recubrimiento de teja. En este caso, solo se aprecia, la teja, colocada minuciosamente para evitar el paso de la lluvia y los rayos del sol.
In the back, we find two corridors where you can continue to enjoy the art, with beautiful murals where the culture of the region is reflected as this giant and beautiful woman who walks through the beautiful mountains of the Andean Cordillera. Also in some walls of the corridors we can find inlaid glass, paintings and drawings, which enhance the beauty of the place.
En la parte posterior, encontramos dos pasillos donde se puede seguir disfrutando del arte, con hermosos murales donde se refleja la cultura de la región como esta gigante y hermosa mujer que anda por las bellas montañas de la cordillera andina. También en algunas paredes de sus pasillos podemos encontrar vidrios incrustados, pinturas y dibujos, que realzan la belleza del lugar.
At the end, we found a beautiful old woman, sculpted to scale size, very realistic, with the typical costumes of the Andes, but unfortunately, my phone battery ran out.
Al final, encontramos una bella anciana, esculpida a tamaño escala, muy realista, con los trajes típicos de los Andes, pero lamentablemente, la batería del teléfono se me agoto.
In general terms, the market is a very interesting place, it is well preserved and the people offer you an extraordinary attention. The tour is done in a very comfortable way and in each aisle you can find beautiful works of art, with excellent details, that you will surely want to take home. El recorrido, se hace de una manera muy cómoda y en cada pasillo puedes encontrar obras hermosas, con excelentes detalles, que seguro querrás llevarte a casa.
