Hello, Hello friends lovers of architecture and design, today I will take you back to the year 1843 and we will know the old wheat mill.
I had no idea that in the town of Escaguey, 27 km from the city of Merida, I was going to find this amazing place, an old house, where a mill worked to process wheat. Nowadays, it is a museum where we also find a restaurant called El Viejo Molino.
Undoubtedly, this place has been restored, so that today we can continue enjoying it. It is very interesting to tour its facilities and discover its architectural features and the materials used at that time.
Hola, Hola amigos amantes de la arquitectura y el diseño, hoy los llevaré de vuelta al año 1843 y conoceremos el viejo molino de trigo.
No tenía idea de que en la población de Escaguey a 27 Km desde la ciudad de Mérida, me iba a encontrar con este sitio tan asombroso, una casona antigua, donde funcionaba un molino para procesar el trigo. Actualmente, es un Museo donde también encontramos un restaurante llamado el Viejo Molino.
Sin duda, este lugar ha sido restaurado, para que hoy podamos seguir disfrutándolo. Resulta muy interesante, poder recorrer sus instalaciones y descubrir sus características arquitectónicas y los materiales usados en esa época.
Mérida is an excellent producer of this cereal, that is why our traditional arepas are not made of corn, but of wheat, and in ancient times, before the arrival of technology and especially before the importation of processed flour, they used these mills that worked thanks to the energy of water.
Upon entering, you find a beautiful facade in light blue. This is one of my favorite colors for walls, because it is a color that inspires serenity. Also, on this occasion I feel that it combines very well with the brick, the uncovered areas that let you see the earth and the sign.
The first thing that catches our attention is that on the facade we observe a kind of tunnel at the bottom of the structure, with a series of gears and immediately you wonder what its function is, but when you enter you understand everything. Another thing that caught my attention is the difference in height of each of the floors. The top floor has a relatively low height.
Mérida es un excelente productor de este cereal, de allí es que nuestras arepas tradicionales no son de maíz, sino de trigo, y en la antigüedad antes de la llegada de la tecnología y especialmente, antes de que comenzara la importación de harina ya procesada, usaban estos molinos que funcionaban gracias a la energía del agua.
Al entrar, encuentras una hermosa fachada en azul celeste. Este es uno de mis colores favoritos en paredes, porque es un color que inspira mucha serenidad. Además, en esta ocasión siento que combina muy bien con el ladrillo, las áreas descubiertas que dejan ver la tierra y el letrero.
Lo primero que llama la atención es que en la fachada observamos una especie de túnel en la parte inferior de la estructura, con una serie de engranajes y de inmediato te preguntas cuál es su función, pero al entrar lo comprendes todo. Otra cosa que me llamó la atención es la diferencia de altura de cada uno de los pisos. El piso superior tiene una altura relativamente baja.
On the left side facade, we can see the shape of the roof, built with tiles, whose color shows that it is very old. We have a gable roof, with a good slope. We also observe a small window framed in wood. A few meters from it, there is a stream.
En la fachada lateral izquierda, podemos observar la forma del techo, construido con tejas, cuyo color deja notar que es muy antigua. Tenemos un techo a dos aguas, con buena pendiente. También observamos una pequeña ventana enmarcada en madera. A pocos metros de ella, pasa un riachuelo.
Note the low height of the back wall, in this area the windows are larger and are protected by wooden bars.
Observen la poca altura de la pared posterior, en esta área las ventanas son más grandes y están protegidas por rejas de madera.
After a walk around the museum, we arrived at the main entrance. Here we are greeted by a beautiful green area that connects the museum with the restaurant, which was formerly the home of the mill owners.
Después de dar una vuelta por los alrededores del museo, llegamos a su entrada principal. Aquí nos recibe una hermosa área verde que comunica al museo con el restaurante, el cual antiguamente era la vivienda de los dueños del molino.
Through an arched doorway, we can enter and learn about its interior and how wheat is processed. Above the door we find the year of its foundation which, as I mentioned at the beginning, dates back to 1843. Note the thick thickness of its walls and is that it was built with wall, that is to say, with earth.
A través de una puerta en arco, podemos entrar y conocer cómo es su interior y cómo se procesa el trigo. Arriba de la puerta encontramos el año de su fundación que, como mencioné al inicio, data de 1843. Nótese el grueso espesor de sus paredes y es que fue construida con tapia, es decir, con tierra.
Upon entering we find a wine distiller. In this area of the State of Mérida, artisanal wine of excellent quality is produced. One of the things that impressed me is the state of the wood. You can tell it is old, but it is very well preserved. I can imagine the maintenance work they have had to do to keep most of the structure in its original state.
Al entrar encontramos un destilador de vinos. En esta zona del Estado Mérida, se produce vino artesanal de excelente calidad. Una de las cosas que me impresionó, es el estado de la madera. Se nota que es antigua, pero se conserva muy bien. Puedo imaginarme el trabajo de mantenimiento, que han tenido que realizar para mantener la mayoría de la estructura, en su estado original.
Wood at that time was the main material used to build the structural or supporting part of the buildings. Supporting all the loads in this museum, is the responsibility of the slabs built with wooden planks, columns, beams and wooden roof purlins.
La madera en esa época era el principal material que se usaba para levantar la parte estructural o de soporte de las edificaciones. Soportar todas las cargas en este museo, es responsabilidad de las losas construidas con tablones de madera, columnas, vigas y correas de techo de madera.
Inside, they briefly explained to us how this mill, which covers a large area, worked. It was a very rewarding and interesting experience. Remember the tunnel we saw on the façade? Here we see it from a top view.
It turns out that a stream of water passed through that tunnel, which provided enough energy to activate all the pulleys and operate the various machines that processed the wheat. These ancient machines even sorted the grain according to size by passing it through different sieves.
En el interior, nos explicaron brevemente cómo funcionaba este molino, que abarca gran espacio. Fue una experiencia muy gratificante e interesante. ¿Recuerdan el túnel que vimos en la fachada? Acá lo vemos desde una vista superior.
Resulta que a través de ese túnel pasaba una corriente de agua, que proporcionaba la suficiente energía para activar todas las poleas y hacer funcionar las distintas máquinas que procesaban el trigo. Incluso, estas máquinas antiguas clasificaban el grano según su tamaño, al ser pasadas por distintos tamices.
After observing the mill, we went up to the next level. You can notice that the staircase is steep, quite narrow and each step is higher than what we are used to nowadays.
Después de observar el molino, subimos, al siguiente nivel. Pueden darse cuenta de que la escalera es de gran pendiente, bastante estrecha y cada peldaño es más alto de lo que estamos acostumbrados en la actualidad.
On the second floor are the pipes through which the wheat was brought in for processing. Here we also found a room that was used for storage. I must confess that walking on this floor was a little scary, because the wood moves a lot.
En la segunda planta, se encuentran las tuberías por donde ingresaban el trigo para ser procesado. Aquí también encontramos, una habitación que servía de almacenamiento. Debo confesar que caminar en esta planta, daba un poco de miedo, porque la madera se mueve mucho.
We took the opportunity to enjoy the hallways. You know that most of the old houses had long corridors to enjoy. From here you have a very nice view of the restaurant and the park, plus the beautiful scenery that surrounds this place.
Aprovechamos de disfrutar de los pasillos. Ya saben que la mayoría de las casas antiguas, tenían largos pasillos para disfrutar. Desde aquí tienes una vista muy buena al restaurante y al parque, además del hermoso paisaje que rodea este lugar.
The park is beautiful, I like that they thought about the little ones and incorporated a playground, this makes the place suitable for the whole family. In addition, everything is in complete harmony, the design of the concrete benches is different, very beautiful. And we also find very old tools and cannons that today are only part of the decoration, but everything is perfectly integrated in the middle of the green nature.
El parque es hermoso, me gusta que pensaran en los más pequeños e incorporaran un parque, esto hace que el lugar se adapte a toda la familia. Además, todo está en completa armonía, el diseño de las bancas de concreto es diferente, muy hermosas. Y además encontramos herramientas muy antiguas y cañones que hoy solo forman parte de la decoración, pero todo se integra perfectamente en medio de la verde naturaleza.
The house where the restaurant is located is beautiful. The terracotta floor, with those beautiful elongated corridors, all very clean and tidy, with beautiful plants and wooden ornaments, which make it very picturesque. It was closed, because we arrived very early, but without a doubt, it is a great place to go to enjoy and spend a different day.
La casona donde se encuentra el restaurante es preciosa. El piso terracota, con esos hermosos pasillos alargados, todo muy limpio y ordenado, con hermosas plantas y adornos en madera, que la hacen muy pintoresca. Estaba cerrado, porque llegamos muy temprano, pero sin duda, es un gran lugar para ir a disfrutar y pasar un día diferente.
