Hello, Hello, architecture and design lovers, I hope you are having an incredible week full of blessings. Once again, I am immensely happy to be able to share with you one of the things I am most passionate about, which is the world of construction and the different civil and architectural works.
In my previous post I shared a structure of great importance in the Andean region of my country: the famous stone chapel of the artist José Félix Sánchez, who used stone as the main construction material in his beautiful work. Today I want to continue sharing with you how this material is used in the Venezuelan páramo area, specifically in the Mifafi páramo, which is located in the Sierra la Culata National Park.
Hola, Hola, amantes de la arquitectura y el diseño, espero estén pasando una semana increíble llena de bendiciones. Una vez más, estoy inmensamente feliz de poder compartir con ustedes una de las cosas que más me apasionan, que es el mundo de la construcción y las distintas obras civiles y arquitectónicas.
En mi post anterior compartí una estructura de gran importancia en la región andina de mi país: la famosa capilla de piedra del artista José Félix Sánchez, quien usó la piedra como el principal material de construcción en su hermosa obra. Hoy quiero precisamente seguir compartiendo con ustedes, cómo es usado este material en la zona del páramo venezolano, específicamente en el páramo Mifafi, el cual está ubicado en el Parque Nacional Sierra la Culata.
In the beautiful town of Apartaderos, a few kilometers from the trans-Andean highway, we found Mifafi, a beautiful valley with an altitude of over 3600 meters above sea level according to the information provided by the tourist guides. When we visited it, it was after 4 o'clock in the afternoon, it was raining and you can imagine how cold it was.
While ascending to the Refugio del Condor, I enjoyed the architecture of the town, very picturesque and beautiful, but it was difficult to get good pictures. Most of the houses have several characteristics in common and any design, professional or not, must be thought to cover the basic needs of those who live there and the place, the climate and the external conditions play an important role in it.
En el bello pueblo de Apartaderos, a unos km de la carretera trasandina, encontramos Mifafi, un valle precioso con una altitud mayor a los 3600 msnm según información de los guías turísticos. Cuando lo visitamos, eran pasadas las 4 de la tarde, llovía y se puede imaginar el frío que hacía.
Mientras ascendíamos al Refugio del Cóndor, disfrute de la arquitectura del pueblo, muy pintoresca y hermosa, pero fue difícil obtener buenas fotos. La mayoría de las viviendas tienen varías características en común y es que cualquier diseño que se realice sea profesional o no debe estar pensado en cubrir las necesidades básicas de quienes las habitan y el lugar, el clima y las condiciones externas, juegan un papel importante en él.
In areas with paramo climates, high altitude and therefore less oxygen in the air, where the cold is present most of the year, especially at night, the inhabitants had to adapt to these extreme conditions and built their houses, with specific characteristics and materials to provide them with comfort and wellbeing.
En las zonas con climas de páramo, de gran altitud y por ende menos oxígeno en el aire, donde el frío está presente la mayor parte del año, especialmente en las noches, sus habitantes debieron adaptarse a estas condiciones extremas y fueron construyendo sus casas, con características y materiales específicos que les proporcionara bienestar y confort.
If we visit places like Mifafi, we will find low houses, built in this way in order to conserve heat and protect it from the wind. In my country, it is not common to use heating and in these hamlets very few places use it, especially those that are intended for tourist purposes.
Si visitamos lugares como Mifafi, encontraremos casas de baja altura, construidas así con la finalidad de conservar el calor y protegerla del viento. En mi país, no es común usar calefacción y en estos caseríos son muy pocos los lugares los que la usan, sobre todo los que están destinados a fines turísticos.
Another very common feature, especially in older houses, is the thickness of their walls, especially those built in earth. They are very thick walls, precisely, to keep the heat inside them. We usually see that most of the houses have a single entrance, with wooden doors of two leaves, small windows and located at the top of the wall.
Otra característica muy común, especialmente en las casas más antiguas, es el grosor de sus paredes, sobre todo las construidas en tierra. Son paredes de gran espesor, precisamente, para mantener el calor dentro de ellas. Solemos ver, que la mayoría de las casas tienen una sola entrada, con puertas de madera de dos hojas, ventanas pequeñas y situadas en la parte superior de la pared.
The roofs are generally made of caña brava cane, placed on wooden beams and covered with Creole clay tiles. These roofs always have a steep slope, which is necessary for rainwater to drain easily.
Los techos generalmente son de caña brava, dispuestas sobre vigas de madera y cubiertas con tejas de arcilla criolla. Estos techos siempre tienen una gran pendiente, lo cual es necesario para que el agua de lluvia drene con facilidad.
When we arrived at the condor refuge, a place where there is one of the few remaining specimens of this beautiful bird in extinction, and also is located the park ranger, a visitor center, where they give you information about the Andean condor and many interesting facts, some candy stores and typical drinks of the Andean cuisine, the first thing that caught my attention was the beautiful farmhouse built of stone.
Cuando llegamos al refugio del cóndor, un lugar donde se encuentra uno de los pocos ejemplares que quedan de esta hermosa ave en extinción, y además está situado el guardaparques, un centro de visitantes, donde te dan información del cóndor andino y muchos datos interesantes, algunas tiendas de dulces y bebidas típicas de la gastronomía andina, lo primero que me llamo la atención fue el hermoso caserío construido en piedra.
And how not to use the stone in this area? Wherever you look, you can see different types of rocks, product of the geological processes that have occurred in this area. I remember that my geology professor, in college, always told us that the rocky material in these areas is of excellent quality, where there are many granite rocks, and these are of great strength and durability.
¿Y cómo no usar la piedra en esta zona? Si a dónde quieres que mires, observas distintos tipos de rocas, producto de los procesos geológicos que se han dado en esta zona. Recuerdo que mi profesor de geología, en la universidad, siempre nos decía que el material rocoso de estas zonas, es de excelente calidad, donde se encuentran muchas rocas de granito, y estas son de gran resistencia y durabilidad.
I love the picturesque architecture of this area, sustainable constructions, where they used materials present in the area, creating a perfect harmony with the environment.
Visit Mifafi and live a wonderful experience in this valley so important for the ecosystem of the Andes, with great geological history, beautiful architecture, full of friendly and cordial people, who only yearn to preserve the life of this endangered bird. Our beloved Andean Condor.
Me encanta la pintoresca arquitectura de esta zona, construcciones sostenibles, donde usaron material presente en la zona, creando una armonía perfecta con el entorno.
Visita Mifafi y vive una experiencia maravillosa en este valle tan importante para el ecosistema de los Andes, de gran historia geológica, una arquitectura hermosa, llena de gente amable y cordial, que solo anhela preservar la vida de esta ave en peligro de extinción.
