Last Friday, February 18, my wife and I were sharing with the Guerra Figueroa family, a friendly family that life gave us, a family that we value for its high human quality, a spiritual family with which we are united with sacred ties of brotherhood family of the soul based on deference and decorum, family of heart, true friends that we admire; wonderful beings with whom we share and whom we love. Relationship that was not born of consanguinity but of reason, based on respect and cordiality, consubstantiated in love.

El pasado viernes 18 de febrero, mi esposa y yo, estuvimos compartiendo con la familia Guerra Figueroa, familia amiga que la vida nos regaló, familia que valoramos por su altísima calidad humana, familia espiritual con la que estamos estrechamente unidos con sagrados lazos de fraternidad, familia del alma fundamentada en la deferencia y el decoro, familia de corazón, amigos verdaderos que admiramos; seres maravillosos con los que compartimos y a quienes amamos. Parentesco que no nació de la consanguinidad sino de la razón, sustentado en el respeto y la cordialidad, consustanciado en el amor.

After the brief introduction, I invite you to take a quick tour of Venezuelan colonial architecture, which takes its first steps from the 16th century when Venezuela begins to be a dependent colony of the Spanish Empire. Observing some architectural details we realize that civil, military and religious constructions are modest, discreet, simple and most do not exhibit ostentatious artistic elements as in other parts of the world, the cause of this was the impossibility of using expensive materials. and the lack of skilled labor. The socioeconomic conditions of the country did not offer possibilities that would allow majestic constructions.

Después de la breve introducción les invito a hacer un rápido recorrido por la arquitectura colonial venezolana, la cual da sus primeros pasos a partir del siglo XVI cuando Venezuela comienza a ser colonia dependiente del Imperio español. Al observar algunos detalles arquitectónicos nos damos cuenta que las construcciones de caracter civil, militar y religiosa son modestas, discretas, sencillas y la mayoría no exhiben elementos artísticos ostentosos como en otras partes del mundo, la causa de esto fue la imposibilidad de utilizar materiales costosos y la falta de mano de obra calificada. Las condiciones socioeconómicas del país no ofrecían posibilidades que permitieran construcciones majestuosas.

Venezuelan civil architecture, from the colonial era, is characterized by presenting popular housing loaded with simplicity of its forms, without many scenographic effects, or great artistic finishes. The use of some materials typical of the area such as wood, bitter cane, adobe, rammed earth and clay, were essential elements in the construction.

La arquitectura civil venezolana, de la época colonial, se caracteriza por presentar viviendas populares cargadas de simplicidad de sus formas, sin muchos efectos escenográficos, ni grandes acabados artísticos. El empleo de algunos materiales propios de la zona como la madera, la caña amarga, el adobe, la tapia y la arcilla, fueron elementos primordiales en la construcción.

Observing the historic centers of Venezuelan cities (urban areas) we realize that they present, in many cases, the same design: a rectangular or square plaza and around it the Church, the family houses, the civil headquarters, some public institution, shops and the four cobbled streets that characterize and define the block.

Al observar los cascos históricos de las ciudades venezolanas (zonas urbanas) nos damos cuenta que presentan, en muchos casos, el mismo diseño: una plaza rectangular o cuadrada y a su alrededor la Iglesia, las casas de familia, la jefatura civil, alguna institución pública, comercios y las cuatro calles empedradas que la caracterizan y definen la manzana.

Most family houses have a main entrance that faces the main street, large openings (doors and windows) that let in natural light; the main entrance is followed by the hall; a long corridor that connected the entrance with the interior of the house, the open central patio and the rooms located around it. The structural design of the gabled roof is accompanied by large eaves that allowed the use of rainwater, which was stored in large barrels, buckets or barrels. The covered corridor that protrudes from the construction is also characteristic. The number of decorative figures that were put on the construction depended on the economic power of each family.

In conclusion, bahareque, clay and mud, bitter cane, large wooden beams, stones, tiles... among other materials, predominate in Venezuelan architecture.

La mayoría de las casas de familia tienen una entrada principal que da hacia la calle más importante, grandes vanos (puertas y ventanas) que dejan pasar la luz natural; a la entrada principal le sigue el zaguán; un pasillo largo que comunicaba la entrada con el interior de la vivienda, el patio central descubierto y las habitaciones ubicadas a su alrededor. Al diseño estructural del techo a dos aguas le acompañan grandes aleros que permitían aprovechar el agua de la lluvia, la cual se almacenaba en grandes toneles, cubos o barriles. El pasillo techado que sobresale de la construcción también es característicos. La cantidad de figuras decorativas que se le pusieran a la construcción dependían del poder económico de cada familia.

En conclusión, el bahareque, arcilla y barro, la caña amarga, grandes vigas de madera, piedras, tejas... entre otros materiales, predominan en la arquitectura venezolana.

At the beginning I mentioned that last Friday, February 18, my wife and I were sharing with our Guerra Figueroa family. That day we visited the historic center of the Municipality El Hatillo, observing closely the characteristics described above of colonial architecture and the formation of urban cities. We entered the Church of Santa Rosalía de Palermo and we could appreciate its beauty; In addition, we witnessed the creativity that beautifies and improves the quality of life of the inhabitants of the place. The entire historic center was converted into a tourist place. El Hatillo is one of the most visited villages located near the city of Caracas.

Al comienzo mencioné que el pasado viernes 18 de febrero, mi esposa y yo, estuvimos compartiendo con nuestra familia Guerra Figueroa. Ese día visitamos el casco histórico del Municipio El Hatillo, observando de cerca las características antes descritas de la arquitectura colonial y la formación de ciudades urbanas. Entramos a la Iglesia Santa Rosalía de Palermo y pudimos apreciar su belleza; además, fuimos testigos de la creatividad que embellece y mejora la calidad de vida de los habitantes del lugar. Todo el casco histórico fue convertido en un lugar turístico. El Hatillo es uno de los pueblos más visitados ubicado cerca de la ciudad de Caracas.

El Hatillo is a municipality belonging to the Miranda State, Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela has a surface of approximately 81 km² and borders to the north with the municipalities Baruta and Sucre, to the south with the municipalities of Baruta and Paz Castillo, to the east with the municipality of Sucre and to the west with the municipality of Baruta. The municipality is located in a mountainous area, in the north-central region of Venezuela. It has a parish, Santa Rosalía de Palermo, it has a pleasant mountain climate, rivers and streams of pure and crystalline waters, abundant vegetation. Flora and fauna of great variety and most importantly, good, friendly, decent and hard-working people. In the Municipality there are many places of interest, but the Plaza Bolívar, the Church and the entire historic center stand out.

El Hatillo was declared Cultural Heritage of the Nation in 1960 for its historical importance and representation of Venezuelan colonial architecture. The center of El Hatillo was declared a Traditional Town according to municipal gazette number 18 in 1996. In 2005, the Institute of Cultural Heritage declared this center a Site of Cultural Interest for its protection.

El Hatillo es un municipio perteneciente al Estado Miranda, República Bolivariana de Venezuela tiene una superficie apróximada de 81 km² y limita al norte con los municipios Baruta y Sucre, al sur con los municipios Baruta y Paz Castillo, al este con el municipio Sucre y al oeste con el municipio Baruta. El municipio está situado en una zona montañosa, en la región centro-norte de Venezuela. Tiene una parroquia, Santa Rosalía de Palermo, posee un agradable clima de montaña, ríos y quebradas de aguas puras y cristalinas, vegetación abundante. Flora y fauna de gran variedad y lo mas importante, gente buena, amable, decente y trabajadora. En el Municipio son muchos los lugares de interés pero destaca la plaza Bolívar, la Iglesia y todo el casco histórico.

El Hatillo fue declarado Patrimonio Cultural de la Nación en 1960 por su importancia histórica y representación de la arquitectura colonial venezolana. El centro de El Hatillo fue declarado Casco Tradicional según gaceta municipal número 18 en 1996. En 2005, el Instituto de Patrimonio Cultural, declaró este centro como Bien de Interés Cultural para su protección.

El Hatillo was founded by Baltazar de León in 1784, and shortly after the church of Santa Rosalía de Palermo was inaugurated, to which we have already mentioned, a church with a single baroque nave, which constitutes the most important religious symbol of El Hatillo, located east of Plaza Bolívar, next to it is the Casa Parroquial and a bookstore that occupies the entire block.

Around Plaza Bolívar there are four streets. To the north of the square, there is Escalona Street where there are two banks, the Mayor's Office and a restaurant with a colonial façade, tiled roofs, large windows and colonial-style lighthouses. On Rosalía Street, south of the square, is the Social and Cultural Center, a craft store and several restaurants that maintain their colonial-style facades. To the west is the house of Baltasar de León, which is a cultural heritage site, and four restaurants on the same block. The historic center has become a center with shops, bars, restaurants, ice cream parlors and pastry shops. Around the square all the family homes disappeared.

El Hatillo, fue fundado por Baltazar de León en 1784, y poco después se inaugura la iglesia de Santa Rosalía de Palermo, a la que ya hemos hecho mención, Iglesia de una sola nave de estilo barroco, la cual constituye el símbolo religioso más importante de El Hatillo, ubicada al este de la plaza Bolívar, a su lado está la Casa Parroquial y una librería que ocupa la cuadra completa.

Alrededor de la plaza Bolívar hay cuatro calles. Al norte de la plaza, está la calle Escalona donde se encuentran dos bancos, la sede de la Alcaldía y un restaurante con fachada colonial, techos de tejas, grandes ventanales y faros de estilo colonial. En la calle Rosalía, al sur de la plaza, está el Centro Social y Cultural, una tienda de artesanía y varios restaurantes que mantienen sus fachadas con estilo colonial. Al oeste, se encuentra la casa de Baltasar de León, que es patrimonio cultural, y cuatro restaurantes en la misma cuadra. El casco histórico se ha convertido en un centro con tiendas, bares, restaurante, heladerías y pastelerías. Alrededor de la plaza desaparecieron todas las viviendas familiares.

Currently the houses have the same facades but were refurbished inside and converted into prosperous commercial businesses, being one of the town's attractions for the wide variety of products they offer to locals and visitors. The day of our visit, the daughter of my friends Aída and Henry, the beautiful young Yuruari Guerra Figueroa, an anesthesiologist and specialist in Algology (a doctor who deals with the causes and treatments of pain), had the courtesy to invite us to eat at one of the most beautiful and modern places in the historic center of El Hatillo, it is Hajillo's restaurant, located on Miranda Street, CC Doña Aurora, local No. 4.

En la actualidad las casas lucen las mismas fachadas pero fueron reacondicionadas en su interior y convertidas en prósperos negocios comerciales, siendo uno de los atractivos del pueblo por la gran variedad de productos que ofrecen a propios y visitantes. El día de nuestra visita, la hija de mis amigos Aída y Henry, la hermosa joven Yuruari Guerra Figueroa, médico anestesiólogo y especialista en Algología (médico que aborda las causas y tratamientos del dolor) tuvo la deferencia de invitarnos a comer en uno de los lugares mas bello y moderno del casco histórico de El Hatillo, se trata de Hajillo´s restaurant, ubicado en la calle Miranda, C.C Doña Aurora, local N° 4.

The restaurant impressed me pleasantly with its modern style , beautiful, redesigned for comfort and good food for the variety of exquisite dishes it offers. The place, a former colonial house, was very well conditioned, achieving a correct distribution of space, providing harmony and peace, good lighting, beautiful ornamental details, large rooms that show elegant and spectacular furniture from yesterday and today, past and present in a same place, the fresh and ventilated place, clean, impeccable and most importantly the cordial treatment that the staff gives to the clients. If one day you visit the historic center of El Hatilo, I recommend you visit Hajillo´s restaurant, and you will see what you are reading in this publication.

El restaurante me impresionó gratamente por su estilo moderno, hermoso, rediseñado para el confort y buen comer por la variedad de exquisitos platos que ofrece. El local, otrora casa colonial, fue muy bien acondicionado logrando una correcta distribución de los espacio, proporcionando armonía y paz, buena iluminación, bonitos detalles ornamentales, grandes salas que muestran elegantes y espectaculares muebles de ayer y de hoy, pasado y presente en un mismo lugar, el sitio fresco y ventilado, limpio, impecable y lo mas importante el trato cordial que da el personal a los clientes.
