Hello friends in Architecture+Design community.
Today I will share traditional architecture and design in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia. In North Sumatra there are Karo tribes who live in the highlands of Karo land, the Karo tribe is famous for its customs that uphold the values of their ancestors and traditional leaders, this can be seen from the decorations contained in various buildings typical of the Karo tribe. The Karo tribe has a famous building which are called Jambur.
Jambur is a building that has a large room, jambur is a multipurpose building used for the traditional needs of the Karo tribe, in the province of North Sumatra, Indonesia. The Karo tribe usually hold deliberations, traditional wedding parties, traditional death parties and other activities in Jambur.
The traditional Jambur building design has several characteristics typical of the Karo tribe, such as decorative motifs in the form of lizard animal decorations found on each wall of the building and also buffalo head decorations on the roof of the building.
at both ends of the roof made of palm fiber there is a triangular woven bamboo called "ayo ayo”. at the end “ayo ayo” precisely at the top, there is a horned buffalo head with a bowed buffalo head position. Traditional Karo people believe that buffalo horns placed on the roof of palm fibers can ward off evil disturbances or repel evil.
Another unique architecture that characterizes the traditional jambur of the Karo tribe is the roof of the building made of fibers. The fibers are obtained from the stems of the old palm or kolang kaling plant.
Another architectural uniqueness found in the Jambur building is the pillars that support the building made of wood. In traditional Jambur buildings, the supporting poles are made of wood, this is a form of cultural heritage that has been preserved until modern times.
The architecture of the Jambur building is similar to the traditional house of the Karo tribe, namely Siwaluh Jabu. Siwaluh jabu is a stilt house inhabited by several families in one building, while Jambur does not have a stage building and is only a large room to hold various traditional events.
Its uniqueness is found in the distinctive decorative design of the Karo tribe which is found on the pillars of the building.
for the support the roof of the fibers, they still use pieces of wood and bamboo.
Usually the jambur building consists of one large main room as a place for an activity to take place.
In Jambur there will be a traditional wedding party, therefore the main room has been decorated with a beautiful design for the event. at a traditional wedding ceremony, the jambur room will be designed with bright bright colors such as red and orange, but during a death custom event, the design of the jambur room will be dominated by dark colors such as brown and black.
Because of the architecture and design of Jambur without walls, the Jambur room seems spacious and cool, because of that, the youth of the Karo tribe often stay in Jambur.
Thus the architecture and design of the Karo tribe Jambur.
